Technical Officials play a key role in the safe running of events nationwide and in the continuous improvement the sport of Triathlon.
Technical Officials (TOs) come from all sporting backgrounds – from those with vast triathlon experience to those who only recently began in triathlon. The TO’s role is primarily to make sure the event is fun, safe and fair.

The officiating pathway consists of five levels and is linked between Triathlon Ireland and World Triathlon. This pathway allows Technical Officials to progress the level of event they are eligible to officiate at, from National Events to World Triathlon events.

This is a qualification aimed at individuals who are interested in becoming a volunteer Technical Official and has been designed to provide attendees with the knowledge required to begin officiating, as well as covering the soft skills needed to develop as an Official.

The National Technical Official (NTO) course provides the transition point from officiating domestically to officiating internationally. This is the first step on the World Triathlon Officiating Pathway.

From 2020, all ROI Technical Officials officiating where junior athletes are eligible to compete, must be Garda Vetted and have completed relevant training. The Technical Committee plays a vital role in supporting the growth and integrity of triathlon officiating in Ireland. Chaired by experienced officials, the committee ensures that officiating standards remain fair consistent and aligned with international best practice.
