Williamson secures silver in Vigo

Tom Williamson secured silver this weekend at the 2024 World Triathlon Para Cup Vigo. Williamson took an early lead with his signature fast swim. It remained a tight race against Brazil’s Ronan Cordeiro as the athletes exited T2. Cordeiro went on to take the Gold medal after producing a 17 minute 5km, with Williamson coming across the line for a comfortable 2nd over two minutes ahead of third place.

Williamson remains in 11th position on the Men’s PTS5 Paralympic qualification rankings, with only 56 points separating him and 9th place to qualify for the Paris Paralympic Games. A win at a Para-Cup or a podium at a Para-Series will provide him with enough of a points boost to move into the top 9.

Donnacha McCarthy, and his guide Sean Husband, also continued their race to secure points for the Paris Paralympic Triathlon in Vigo this weekend, crossing the line in 7th. The duo lost time in the swim, however, will be able to take confidence in their bike and run splits as they continue to focus on Paralympic qualification.

The result in Vigo sees the pair drop two places in the Paralympic qualification ranking to 14th place. With the top 9 qualifying for the Games, the race for points continues with less than 150 points separating 9th and 14th in the Men’s PTVI Paralympic qualification rankings. McCarthy is in a similar position to Williamson in terms of the performances required to jump up the
rankings.

Both athletes will switch their focus to the 2024 World Triathlon Para Cup Taranto, Italy, next weekend. With four races left in the Paralympic qualification window, it’s still all to play for.
