Triathlon Ireland Launch New Events Masterclass Series

Triathlon Ireland Launch Masterclass Series for Event Organisers & Technical Officials

Triathlon Ireland will host the ‘Embrace the Summer’ Events Masterclass over the next five weeks. Starting on Tuesday, 11th May – the series of webinars will replace the annually held National Events Conference for 2021. New this year is the introduction of a Continual Professional Development (CPD) element to the series.

The series will take place virtually and will be free for Event Organisers and Technical Officials to attend. The series has been designed for all Event Organisers, from those starting out to the highly experienced. The aim of the ‘Embrace the Summer’ Events Masterclass is to provide a number of workshops for Event Organisers and Technical Officials in areas that will enhance the race experience.

We have confirmed a number of speakers for the series, who offer a wealth of knowledge, experience and insight into areas of Event Organisation. Take a look at the topics and speakers for the ‘Embrace the Summer’ Events Masterclass Series.

Week One: The Triathlon Experience

The experience of triathlon is never more prevalent than at the incredible Norseman Xtreme Triathlon! General Manager Dag Oliver is going to lead a session on the experience of triathlon and how they integrate it into their world-renowned event, which has a lottery system for entries due to its popularity!

Dag Oliver, General Manager, Norseman Triathlon

Dag Oliver has been general manager for Norseman Xtreme Triathlon since 2010. In addition to handling the day-to-day administration, he is the press liaison, sponsor director, web and social media editor, and sustainability whip.

He is also Technical Official and Facilitator for ITU, a Mountaineering guide for the Norwegian Trekking Association and he runs his own small media and photography business, Relaxed Sports Photography. Dag who used to be a triathlete, has never done Norseman himself, and plans to keep it that way. He lives in Oslo with his two-time Norseman finisher wife Marit, young Silje and Henrik.

The Norseman, Our Mission

“The race is only for the few, but the idea of Norseman is for everyone – our athletes, our team, the communities we work with, and our global Norseman community. Our shared Norseman journey is about leaving everyone, and everything, better for our presence.

Together we will sustain and nourish our people, our racers, our causes and our natural Environment” Hardangervidda Triatlonklubb 2020

Week Two: Event Medical Management & Support

Ensuring your event has the right medical team and support in place is an integral part of event planning. Codeblue provides multidisciplinary planning and risk assessment services for some of the largest sporting events in Ireland. This session will provide races and events with the personnel, equipment requirements, logistics and major emergency preparedness.

CodeBlue

Codeblue’s management team have over twenty years’ national and international experience in developing, organising and delivering a wide selection of accredited programmes. They work extensively with healthcare organisations to provide world class training to hospital Consultants, Doctors, Nurses, Paramedics and other allied healthcare personnel. This collaboration has enabled Codeblue to establish and develop into a leading event medical support service by using a highly trained and experienced group of certified emergency care professionals.

Codeblue provides a complete suite of medical support services, covering everything from planning to risk assessment; from the provision of a fully equipped, five-bay resuscitation field hospital and emergency ambulances to the services of a lone first aider.

Week Three: Hosting a Junior Event

The number of Junior triathletes are growing every year. With the launch of the Youth Series, Triathlon Ireland wants to provide our race organiser and officials with the key skills and knowledge to host junior events. The session with Tomas, Technical Official and Junior Race organiser will cover junior race experience, benefits of hosting Junior events to the club and safeguarding for your events.

Tomás Mangan, Race Director & Technical Official, Predator Triathlon Club

An aversion to training and background in event management gave me the time and confidence to plan, prepare and produce race events for children, youth, and junior triathletes. Race organisation for these triathletes is both a rewarding and challenging task for a triathlon club to undertake. The objectives of the presentation are; to articulate the benefits of race organisation to the participant, club and sport; to describe key elements of the organisation of the National Children’s Triathlon Festival hosted annually by Predator Triathlon Club; to identify the critical steps involved in race organisation for children, youth, and junior triathletes.

Week Four: Race Planning and Preparation

The aim of this session is to provide current and new event organisers with the skills and knowledge required to deliver safe, memorable and successful events. This includes delivery of project plans, including information on risk assessments and Emergency Action Plans, designing your course, engaging with stakeholders and building on your athletes’ experience at your events.

Willie Purcell

Willie competed in his first TI event in 2010 where the swim was in an abandoned quarry outside Summerhill, Co. Meath. A few modern day competitors will remember it. Since then, Willie has competed in about 70 Triathlon Ireland sanctioned events. While still competing, Willie very quickly developed an interest in the technical and refereeing side of triathlon. During 2011, Willie became a Technical Official and Motorcycle Official.

In 2012 Willie made his Race Director debut for Naas Triathlon Club, with the introduction of the Kilashee Triathlon. He quickly followed this up as an independent Race Director in creating the Mondello Duathlon and Blessington Triathlon. In recent years Willie attended the preparatory course for European and World Triathlon events which are on his radar for 2021-22.

Willie has thoroughly enjoyed his journey assisting in the development of triathlon in Ireland throughout the last decade. From competitor to Race Director to Technical or Motorcycle Official, each element possess their own challenges but they are all closely linked.  He will continue to contribute to the improvement of Triathlon in Ireland and beyond. The consistent and fair interpretation and application of the ITU rulebook to make events safe and enjoyable for all remains our core objective.

John Wallnutt

John has been involved in organising and competing in triathlons for 15 years.

To date John has race directed over 50 events including Ironman Ireland, Ironman 70.3 Dublin and Dun Laoghaire, DCT x 7, Triathy x 4, Great Dublin Bike Ride, Run in the Dark, Rock n Roll Dublin as well as being Course director on other events including Ironman Wales, Staffordshire, Bolton,Weymouth, Bahrain.

John is currently employed by IRONMAN as Race Director & Operations Manager for UK & Ireland.

Week Five: Running an Inclusive Event

Inclusive sport ensures that everyone is treated equally and fairly, and that everyone has access to sport. This session will go through the importance of making your event more inclusive for all participants and provide race organisers and technical officials with both practical and theoretical considerations.

Pádraig Healy

Pádraig Healy is the National Sports Development Manager at Vision Sports Ireland. Pádraig has a vast amount of experience working within the disability sport sector having worked as the Sports Inclusion Disability Officer with Cork Sports Partnership for four years and in recent years with Kildare Sports Partnership.
