Triathlon Ireland Publishes Nomination Policies for Istanbul 2027 & LA28
Triathlon Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland have published the nomination policies for the Istanbul 2027 European Games and the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games, providing athletes and coaches with clear qualification pathways and performance standards for the next major Games cycle.
The policies outline the nomination and selection criteria athletes must achieve to be considered for Team Ireland, ensuring transparency and clarity throughout the qualification process. Athletes must meet the relevant international qualification requirements, as well as the performance standards set out within the Team Ireland nomination framework.
For the Istanbul 2027 European Games, athletes will be required to demonstrate competitive performance at international level during the 2026 and 2027 seasons. Athletes must attain two results from a combination of top-12 finishes at European Cup events, a top-25 finish at a World Cup, a top-35 finish at a World Triathlon Championship Series race, or hold a current New Flag position in the LA28 rankings. The qualification period concludes on 26 April 2027, with quota places allocated on 28 April 2027.
A Mixed Team Relay will only be considered for nomination if it makes the start list and three athletes in total, across the open and female events, make the start list and are nominated by the Olympic Federation of Ireland.
For LA28, quota places are allocated to the National Olympic Committee through the World Triathlon Olympic qualification system. Team Ireland may secure up to three quota places per gender, with athletes required to satisfy both World Triathlon eligibility criteria and the performance standards established by Triathlon Ireland and the Olympic Federation of Ireland. Athletes must also be ranked within the top 160 of the World Triathlon Individual Ranking by 18 May 2028.
The LA28 policy also highlights the importance of the Mixed Team Relay. Where Team Ireland secures two or more quota places per gender through the individual or relay rankings, athletes must agree to be available for Mixed Team Relay competition to secure nomination.
The publication comes as Irish triathlon continues to build momentum at international level, with athletes competing across World Triathlon events and major championships as they pursue qualification opportunities for both Istanbul 2027 and LA28.
