Round 4 of the Triathlon National Series

Beyond the Wall Triathlon, hosted by Down Triathlon Club at Castle Ward Estate, County Down, formed Round 4 of the Triathlon Ireland National Series. Athletes completed a sprint-distance course featuring a swim in Strangford Lough, a hilly bike route, and a trail run through the Castle Ward grounds.

Castle ward estate and local area

Set within the stunning surroundings of Castle Ward Estate on the shores of Strangford Lough, the Beyond the Wall Triathlon offered athletes a challenging and scenic sprint-distance course.

Following race briefing from Race Director Brian Corry, Competitors assembled along the estate’s iconic stone walls before a rolling swim start at Coal Quay, entering the waters of Strangford Lough four at a time.

After completing the saltwater swim loop, athletes made the short run to transition before tackling a demanding bike course, which included a steep climb through the Castle Ward grounds known locally as ‘Dave’s Hill’ but competitors were rewarded with panoramic views of the estate and surrounding countryside.

Following a return back down Audleystown Road and  returning to T2, the race concluded with a trail run along the shoreline past Audley’s Castle, looping back around and along past transition and the iconic stone wall, and final 1km through forest, before the final run-in to the finish area in the historic Farmyard.
