Race report and Gallery

The Tribesman Triathlon, hosted by Galway Triathlon Club, delivered another memorable day of racing as athletes gathered for Round Five of the Triathlon National Series (TNS) and the Intervarsity Championships.

With strong representation from universities across Ireland, the Intervarsity competition added an extra layer of excitement to the day. Including the University of Limerick National Triathlon Centre athletes, and the distinctive yellow-and-blue tri suits of University College Dublin.

Set within the grounds of University of Galway the central location with close proximity to swim, cycle, transition and run course providing a great spectator experience.

Swim in River Corrib

Athletes made the 500m walk from the race briefing area, through the meadow, beneath the archway and down along the riverbank towards the swim start on the River Corrib.

The course offered stunning views towards Menlo Castle before competitors entered the water.

Three separate waves ensured a smooth start but once the horn sounded there was no shortage of action with a mass start for each of the three waves. Athletes headed upstream to the turning buoy. After rounding the marker, competitors benefited from the faster return section back downstream before exiting via the pontoon at the end of the 750m swim

Transition and Bike

Following the swim, athletes raced back through the short woodland trail and into the meadow towards T1 before heading out onto the bike course.

The 20km route allowed competitors to settle into rhythm before returning through the university grounds and into T2.

Run

Athletes looped around the university grounds, along the river before returning to the meadow – family members, friends, clubmates and unimates lined the final run route, generating a fantastic atmosphere.

Intervarsity Competition

The Intervarsity Championships brought university teams travelling from across the country including:

University College Dublin, University of Galway, University of Limerick, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin City University, University College Cork, Munster Technological University and Ulster University.

Beyond the racing, the event highlighted the community that make university triathlon such a special part of the Triathlon Ireland racing calendar.

Congratulations to all triathletes, volunteers, officials and supporters who helped make Round five of the Triathlon National Series and the Intervarsity Championships such a success.
