Race Report

The second race of the 2026 Triathlon Ireland Duathlon National Series took place in the seaside town of Tramore, Waterford on Sunday 15th February, hosted by Waterford Triathlon Club. Tramore Medical Duathlon saw a competitive field and a strong turnout despite the weather.

The race was scheduled for a start time of 11am to facilitate the Youth Series – supported by AIG, which took place at 8.30am. A heavy downpour began shortly before the race briefing; however conditions slightly improved for the race itself with intermittent showers.

Competitors, keen to get underway, were fast off the mark following a mass start alongside the Estuary road, with spectators lining the streets.

The opening run took athletes through the town of Tramore, showcasing its coastal charm, back along the promenade under the Triathlon Ireland arch. Dodging puddles competitors transitioned to the bike course, heading out and riding steadily through Somerville before continuing along the Waterford Road, on and out and back cycle route – with headwinds testing strength and stamina.

The final run followed a similar route to the first, bringing participants back through the town once more, down to the promenade with crowds cheering them on with a finish right outside the Surf Club.

Maura Barry leads the Female Field

Last Month’s Galco Naas Duathlon Winner Maura Barry headed into T1, with Geraldine Leete and Kathleen Ryan keeping the pressure on from the early stages.

A strong bike leg from Maura(45-49) proved decisive, as she powered through the course to take the lead heading into the final run.

Despite determined efforts from Geraldine and Kathleen, Maura maintained her advantage with a 2 minute 11 second lead to take her second win of the 2026 duathlon season.

Behind her, the battle for the remaining podium spots went right down to the line, with Geraldine Leete edging out Kathleen Ryan by just 16 seconds.

Niall Cornyn wins the Open Category

Looping back around under the arch and returning along the promenade to T1, last year’s National Duathlon Series Winner Cornyn set off on the 16km bike leg ahead of the leading pack.Out on the bike, Niall kept pushing the pace for the number one spot as the field prepared for the final leg of the race.

Coming out of T2 on the closing run, Niall held a massive 2 minute 56 second gap to secure the win, with a fantastic celebration crossing the line.Luke Smith and series regular Edna Bagnall finished in second and third respectively.
