Triathlon Ireland Launches New Rankings System

Triathlon Ireland is delighted to launch a new ranking system for the 2025 season, meaning that for the first time in Irish multisport history there will be national athlete rankings. The rankings, hosted on the My Tri Ranking platform, also incorporates the Duathlon and Triathlon National Series.

SOLVING THE CHALLENGE OF MEASURING PROGRESS

Triathlon is one of the most dynamic and varied sports, with no two races ever being the same—different courses, weather conditions, and field sizes make it difficult to track progress meaningfully. Until now, triathletes have had no way to accurately measure their standing outside of individual race results.

This new system changes everything. By aiming to bring together data from across all sanctioned sprint and standard distance triathlons and duathlons, athletes can now see exactly where they rank on a national scale—racing everyone, everywhere, regardless of which races they enter.

Speaking on the launch, National Events Co-ordinator Roisin MacCarthy outlined the importance of the new system for both events and athletes;

“We are really excited to launch this new platform and ranking system in partnership with My Tri Ranking. Our goal is to eventually have everyone who takes part in a triathlon in Ireland listed in our rankings, enabling all triathletes to analyse where they sit both among their age group and on the national stage. Our international age group athletes will also be able to count their sprint and standard distance triathlon and duathlon races towards their National Ranking, which we hope will encourage more people to join Tri Team Ireland and sign up for international age group racing.”

“We are confident that this change will bring an effective and accurate service for our athletes and our events. Each Thursday throughout the season, athletes will be able to log on and view the updated rankings for the Duathlon Rankings as well as the corresponding Duathlon National Series for example.”

A GAME-CHANGER FOR IRISH ATHLETES

For many athletes, this ranking system will bridge the gap between participation and performance, making progress more tangible and more motivating than ever before.

As My Tri Ranking Founder Will Senior outlines:

“We are thrilled to warmly welcome Irish athletes to our platform, thanks to our exciting new partnership with Triathlon Ireland. Since our first conversation about a potential partnership, it’s been evident that our visions are beautifully aligned. Together we want to seamlessly enhance the athlete experience by providing meaningful and accurate ways to judge progress, whilst also giving athletes the freedom to race where they want. We hope to help motivate athletes and build camaraderie. Partnering with Triathlon Ireland, one of the most progressive governing bodies in sport globally, represents a crucial moment in the My Tri Ranking journey to become the common currency of multisport”.

My Tri Ranking Co-Founder David Pearson added:

“My Tri Ranking was born out of our desire to answer a deceptively simple question. How good at triathlon am I really? With so many overlapping levels of the triathlon pyramid, it never used to be an easy question to answer. For a year now, My Tri Ranking has been successfully answering that question in Britain and thanks to Triathlon Ireland it is great to be able to offer the same and more to Irish athletes. Writing the algorithms that underpin My Tri Ranking has not only been great fun. It has helped me to track my objective performance level over time and to think tactically about my racing by gaining a better understanding of the competition”.

ENCOURAGING MORE RACING & CLUB COMPETITION

Beyond individual motivation, this system has the potential to transform Irish triathlon participation. We believe it will:

✅ Encourage more racing across our 200+ sanctioned events per year, increasing retention and engagement.
✅ Future phases of the project will boost inter-club and provincial competition, adding an exciting team element to racing below National Series level.
✅ Provide a structured pathway from beginner to elite, helping athletes track improvement over seasons and set long-term goals.

Athletes will be able to log in every Thursday throughout the season to see the latest rankings — whether for the National Athlete Rankings, the Duathlon National Series or the Triathlon National Series.

This is a huge step forward for Irish triathlon. Whether you’re an elite competitor or a weekend warrior, this system gives every athlete a place in the rankings and a way to measure and track their hard work.

HOW ARE THE RANKINGS CALCULATED?

The starting point is the best athlete in the world in 2023 for a given gender and World Triathlon multisport discipline. For the men’s triathlon category that was Alex Yee, Beth Potter in women’s triathlon, Mario Mola in men’s duathlon and Emma Pallant-Browne in women’s duathlon. Alex Yee is used as an example in the following explanation.

  • The score achieved by a performance at the 2023 World Number 1’s average level during the 2023 season is awarded 1000 points.
  • For each race, the My Tri Ranking algorithms (a series of fancy maths equations!) estimate the time it would have taken a 2023 Alex Yee, for example, to complete the race. My Tri Ranking make a series of detailed calculations to determine what would likely have happened if Alex Yee had raced in the same event.
  • My Tri Ranking then compare your actual performance in the race to the time estimated for a 2023 Alex Yee. Your performance is then awarded a score, under 1,000 unless in that race you would have beaten Alex Yee’s estimated time.
  • Once you have completed one scoring race in the last 12 months, then you will appear in the National Athlete rankings. If you do more than one scoring race then My Tri Ranking takes the average of your best two races to determine your ranking.
  • The same scoring system is applied to calculate Triathlon and Duathlon National Series points for each event.

WHAT IS CHANGING?

The way that scores in a Duathlon and Triathlon National Series event are calculated has changed to the system outlined above, and the rankings will now be accessed on the My Tri Ranking platform. The eligibility criteria for both National Series remains the same.

For the Duathlon National Series, it will still be an average of an athlete’s score in the National Championships plus their next two highest scores in Duathlon National Series events.

In the Triathlon National Series athletes will still be scored on the average of their four highest scores in Triathlon National Series events, one sprint and one standard distance race must be completed.

Keep an eye out next Thursday, 13th March for the first Duathlon National Series rankings that are fully qualified, once the races at TriLakes Knockma Duathlon and Naas Duathlon complete this weekend!
