Team Ireland enjoyed a successful weekend of international racing at the Africa Triathlon Junior Cup Yasmine Hammamet and accompanying Elite races with Hannah Kennedy producing a brilliant performance to secure the gold medal in the junior women’s race. Irish athletes also recorded solid performances in the senior competitions.
Competing over a sprint-distance course consisting of a 750m sea swim, 20km bike with 4 x 4km loops and 5km run made up of 2 x 2.5km loops through Hammamet, Kennedy delivered a composed race to claim victory in a time of 1:07:09.
Starting at 7.30am, and exiting the water in second place with an 11:08 swim split, Hannah’s 36:06 bike split was the fastest of the day establishing a race-winning advantage. She then backed up the effort with a strong 18:50 run to cross the line first, securing the top spot on the Junior Women’s Podium.
Team Ireland was also represented in the Elite Men’s and Women’s competitions taking place on Sunday 7th June.
In the Elite Women’s race, Saoirse O’Brien finished 16th, gaining valuable international experience against a competitive field.
In the Elite Men’s race, Jonathan Oakey finished 33rd, while Sean McMahon crossed the line in 53rd place in a strong international field.
