Gallery & Report: McDonnell & Casey win Round 3 in Schull
The Triathlon National Series visited Schull TC’s Centra Fastnet Schull Triathlon on Saturday, 6th June, delivering another memorable day of racing on the Wild Atlantic Way. Almost 400 participants registered enjoy a morning of multisport across the Sprint Triathlon, Try a Tri and the Youth Series Aquathlon, supported by AIG Insurance.
SenAN mcDONNELL RETAINS TITLE
In the open race, Galway Triathlon Club’s Senan McDonnell successfully defended his title, claiming victory for the second consecutive year. The National Triathlon Centre athlete, who trains at the University of Limerick, once again demonstrated his class against a strong field. Denis Hegarty produced the fastest run split of the day, clocking 16:48 for the 5km course as he chased down the leader, but ultimately had to settle for second place. Cork Triathlon Club’s Donncha Kiely completed the podium in third.
Casey secures second victory of the series
The female race was led from the front by Cork Triathlon Club’s Deirdre Casey, who controlled proceedings throughout to secure her second victory after just three rounds of the 2026 National Series.
Behind her, the battle for the remaining podium places was fiercely contested. Pulse Triathlon Club’s Kim Hickey and Belpark Triathlon Club’s Andrea Brennan emerged from the water at the head of the chasing group, with Hickey maintaining her advantage throughout the 20km bike course, Brennan and Cork Triathlon Club’s Maura Barry staying in pursuit. Maura Barry then produced a 21:23 run split to move into second place. The fight for third went right to the line, with Killarney Triathlon Club’s Orla Houlihan recording the fastest run split of the day, overtaking both Hickey and Brennan in the closing metres to secure the final podium position.
