Double Podium in Burabay
Russell White and Elizabeth Carr were both on the podium over the weekend at the 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup Burabay, Kazakhstan.
The Olympic distance course featured a shortened swim of 750m due to the cold conditions. Athletes also faced tough conditions on the hilly out and back laps of the bike course in the wind before taking to the flat run course.
In the Men’s race, White made it out of the water in the second group, not far behind the race leaders. The group worked well together on the bike, with White blasting home on the run course with the fastest time of the day over the 10km, to secure silver.
Speaking after the race, White said, “I’m super happy to come 2nd today in Kazakhstan, it’s been a tough couple of years. It’s nice to turn it around and come 2nd today. It was a hard race after the World Cup last weekend, back to back Olympic distances, although they shortened the swim. “I was super happy to be in a race I was able to dictate once again. It gives me a lot of confidence going forward for the rest of the season, and it’s always nice just to be on the steps”
In the Women’s race, Carr produced a strong swim to exit the water in 2nd position, as part of a group of three athletes. The breakaway worked well together and maintained their lead as they returned to T2.
Carr then proceeded to put almost a minute into her closest competitor over the 10km course, to run herself to the top spot on the podium. After the race, she said, “I’m delighted to get the win after the World Cup last week in Samarkand. I’m looking forward to a few down days after a busy few months of racing. I’m looking forward to my next race which will be the European Cup in Cork.”
While Carr hopes to race the European Cup in Cork in June, White’s attention is now focused on the 2024 Europe Triathlon Cup Wels, Austria, on the 22nd of June.
