Triathlon Ireland Board: Thank You Bernard & Welcoming Ian

Triathlon Ireland extends their gratitude to Bernard Hanratty for his service on the board as Vice President and his valuable contribution to our sport. Bernard has held a number of significant roles during his time at Triathlon Ireland. He served as Chair of the Governance and Nominations Committee and was a member of the Audit Committee. Additionally, for World Triathlon, Bernard chaired the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Commission for 4 years and served as Vice Chair of the Women’s Committee.

“It has been a great honour to serve on the board of Triathlon Ireland – building great relationships with stakeholders domestically and internationally which have resulted in Ireland punching well above its weight. The collaboration with CEO’s Chris Kitchen and Darren Coombes; Presidents Lochlann Walsh and Alan Ryan; fellow board members and staff has been best in class. It has been a thoroughly enjoyable and rewarding part of my life.”

Following the 2023 AGM, Ian Haseldine has been elected to the position of Vice President. Triathlon Ireland welcomes Ian to his new role & wishes him all the success. Ian first joined the Board in 2017, taking on the position of Munster representative.

Before coming to triathlon, Ian was both a competitive Alpine skier and soccer player at college level. He competed in the inaugural Fastnet Triathlon in 2004, and since then has competed in many triathlons and duathlons over the years, including full distance events. He also competed in the European Age Group Championships.

Ian has been a Triathlon Ireland Technical official since 2007 and took on the role of Munster Technical Official Secretary for a number of years, being an active member of the Triathlon Ireland Technical Committee and delivering courses for new Technical Officials. Ian is also a member of Schull Triathlon Club, where he gathered valuable experience as chairperson and race director.

“I am so excited about the next four years and look forward to playing my part in the continuing evolution of triathlon in Ireland. Over the past 20 years I have taken on roles with TI such as board director, Munster TO Secretary, Technical Committee member and member of the TO mentor programme. Within my own club, I have taken on the roles of chairperson, treasurer, and race director. I hope that these positions will enable me to support the different stakeholders’ diverse needs within our sport. Thanks to all of the clubs for the support at the AGM. Taking on the role of Vice President of Triathlon Ireland, I truly feel honoured to be given a chance to help lead the future of TI.”

President Alan Ryan added, “It was with great sadness that the Board had to say goodbye to Bernard Hanratty. He was a very hard working member of the board and a fantastic vice President who, in everything he did, and every decision he made, did so with the good of TI in mind. In eight years of service Bernard never missed a meeting and at every meeting his contributions, questions and advice were of huge value. As President I will miss having Bernard as a sounding board and a mentor as I found his experience and wisdom invaluable. The Board are delighted that he is only a phone call away when we need his advice. I am very happy that he will be staying within the triathlon community and continuing his work at World Triathlon level. On behalf of the Board, I wish Bernard all the very best in the future and I know that he will bring the same level of commitment to his next role.”

Alan extends his welcome to Vice President Ian, sharing “I am delighted to welcome Ian Haseldine back on board as Vice President. With his previous experience on Board coupled with his vast experience as a club chair, race director and technical official he will no doubt bring an awful lot to Board. On behalf of the Board we all look forward to working with Ian for the next four years.”
