Waterford and Cork Introduction to Triathlon Program

Over the last six weeks women from Waterford and Cork participated in a ‘Introduction to Triathlon’ program run in conjunction with Waterford Sports Partnership and Cork Sports Partnership.
Each Tuesday, the women had a two hour coached session led by Triathlon Ireland Development Officer, Eleanor Condon. The aim was to have these women ready to undertake a mini triathlon at the end of the six weeks.
The Waterford women completed their program by undertaking a 15 minute swim in Splashworld swimming pool, immediately followed by a 15 minute bike on spin bikes, and finishing with a 15 minute run around the lake at Splashworld.
“The programme was a challenge for me, especially the swimming. However I feel very proud to have completed the 6 weeks. It really was great to meet the other participants and I’m looking forward to the next adventure”, said Ann Maria Langford.
In Cork, prior to beginning their event Triathlon Ireland Women in Sport Advocate, Fiona O’Donnell spoke about her experience in getting involved in triathlon and the importance of having a social group to train with. Heike von Heyne from Cobh Triathlon Club and Kelly Agnew from Cork Triathlon Club spoke about what each of their respective clubs could offer new members and the benefits of being part of a club.
The women had to then start their event which consisted of a 15 minute swim to complete in LeisureWorld Bishopstown, followed by a 20 bike on spin bikes, and to finish, a 15 minute run around the pitches of Munster Technological University.
With smiles on their faces, all the women thoroughly enjoyed the event and were proud of themselves and each other.
“An excellent introduction to Triathlon, a very fun and supportive environment.”, said Laoise Donovan.
James Kirby, Sports Development Officer, Cork Sports Partnership said: “We want to say a massive well done to all participants on completing their journey into Triathlon over the past six weeks. Cork Sports Partnership is thrilled to continue strengthening our relationship with Triathlon Ireland on getting the people of Cork active through a number of fantastic initiatives! Stay tuned for updates on some new and exciting projects coming soon!”
