Lough Cutra – Race Results

The weather gods smiled down over the weekend on those taking part in the many triathlon events at Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon.

From the Youth Series Supported by Costcutter (16-17 year olds) through to the Mixed Team Relay National Championships (featuring a host of Triathlon Ireland Performance athletes), Saturday was a day for fast times, happy faces and some beautiful memories captured here by James Lawlor.

Youth Series

The weekend started with the sprint distance race and within it, the 16-17 year old category of the Youth Series supported by Costcutter.

16-17 Year Olds
In the first of what will be 10 Rounds of the Youth Series in 2023, Senan McDonnell (Galway TC) and Izabella Chidlow (South Coast TC) recorded victories. Ethan Doherty (Westport TC) and Sadhbh Moore (Athy TC) were second and Sean McMahon (Wicklow TC) and Mollie Jackson (Tri-Limits TC) were third.

14-15 Year Olds
Liam O’Driscoll and Lara Buck won the 14-15 year old category in the Youth Series which was staged on Sunday morning. Luke O’Doherty and Amy O’Rourke were second; and Matthew Mahony and Pearl Sands were third.

12-13 Year Olds
Ryan Byrne Nolan and Lara O’Brien Leahy won the 12-13 year old category in the Youth Series with Patrick Lee and Cadey Moore 2nd; and Eoghan Gallagher and Aisling Cosgrove 3rd.

Mixed Team Relay Club National Championships

The customary excitement and freneticism of the Mixed Team Relay was given an additional shot in the arm on Saturday afternoon with the injection of Triathlon Ireland’s Performance athletes, competing for practice ahead of the European Games in Poland next month.

The race of course is also a Club National Championship and the fastest club on the day was Limerick TC, made up of Ronan Costello, Sinead Walsh, Ross Higgins and Shauna Doelken O’Shea.

Galway TC came home in second place, followed closely behind by Naas in 3rd.

Mixed Team Relay – Junior Club Champs

The Junior Club Champs were won by Predator TC Falcons, ahead of Team Athy Juniors and Predator TC Hawks.

Aquathlon National Champs

The other national title up for decision at Lough Cutra on Saturday was the Aquathlon National Champs – a prize grabbed by Jack Kennedy and Vanessa Fenton. Christopher Hogan and Caitlin McDonald claimed silver medals while the bronze medal positions were occupied by Ernest Asensio and Ciara Wilson.
