White To Make Season Debut

Olympian Russell White will make his season debut this weekend as he lines out alongside fellow Irishman Ian Manthey against a strong field in Portugal for the Quarteria European Cup.

White is ranked 48th in the field which includes Jonathan Brownlee, Gustav Iden and Joao Pereira. After missing much of 2022 because of illness, Russell White has put a number of months of solid training behind him and will be looking to recapture the form he has shown when fit and healthy.

“Russell has had a very good training block, two very strong camps and his training has progressed very well,” according to Triathlon Ireland Performance Director Gordon Crawford.

He said the race in Quarteria will be about focussing on targets in the the swim-transition, bike-transition and run rather than placings.

That said, this is the first race White will enter fit and healthy in a number of years and it’s at his preferred standard distance so Quarteria presents an opportunity to start this Olympic qualifying year on the right foot.

Manthey Builds Form for Euro Qualification

Ian Manthey crashed out of this last race in Melilla last weekend but has recovered well and is ranked 45th in the 71 strong field. Gordon Crawford says like White, Manthey has trained well on both of Triathlon Ireland’s winter camps and Quarteria is important for him as he aims to qualify for the European Standard Champs and European Games later this year.

Edgar Races Namibia

10,000km and a world away, James Edgar lines out in Namibia tomorrow at the Swakopmund Africa Cup.

Edgar has taken a series of leaps up in the World and Olympic rankings thanks to some strong performances on his African travels. And coming off the back of a third place finish last week in South Africa against largely the same field, Swakopmund presents another great opportunity for progression.
