Weekend Wrap May 21/22

The open water triathlon season has officially begun!! This weekend saw the start of the Triathlon National Series in Carlow and the Liam Ball Triathlon run by Northwest TC. Lots of IRONMAN action this weekend also, with athletes racing the challenging IRONMAN Lanzarote and Marbella 70.3.

O’Brien & Oakey Win in Carlow

In Carlow, two new faces graced the top step of the Triathlon National Series podium in the shape of Jonathan Oatey and Emma O’Brien. Oatey dominated from gun to tape to win the men’s race by more than five minutes.

O’Brien was competing in her first ever triathlon, not that you would have known it, she set herself up for a confident victory thanks to three strong splits.

Liam Ball Triathlon Returns After Three Years

The ever popular Liam Ball Triathlon made its return on Saturday. Run by Northwest Triathlon Club, almost 100 athletes took on the sprint and try-a-tri events. Popular with beginners due to having a pool swim, the event was won by Sean McLaughlin and Commonwealth Games bound Chloe MacCombe.

IRONMAN Events

A large contingent of Irish athletes travelled to Lanzarote last weekend to take on one of the toughest IRONMAN courses there is. With 89 names on the start list, there were lots of top 10 performances, and two Age Group podiums!

Huge congratulations to Eithne McGorman, third in the women’s 40 – 44 category, and June McMinn, second in the women’s 60 – 64 category!

Becky Woods Wins Loughrea Triathlon 2019

Another large group of Irish athletes travelled to IM Marbella 70.3, 86 in total and no less than FIVE podium spots were earned.

Becky Woods made her season debut a winning one in her 30 – 34 Age Group in 4:48:43 and quickest of all the Irish triathletes racing across all age groups!

Orla Callender won the women’s 60 – 64 AG title and Natasha Carrick the women’s 18 – 24 AG title, Mary O’Donnell was second in this age group. Daire Taylor was second in the women’s 40 – 44 AG.
