James Edgar clinched the best result of his career so far with a blistering finish that earned him 5th place at Europe Triathlon Cup Lievin.

The race in northern France was staged completely indoors in a specially constructed pool surrounded by a running/cycling track.

To the accompaniment live DJs and a packed stadium of spectators, some of the best of Europe’s athletes raced the exciting format of a 150m swim, 3km bike and 1km run through a series of heats, semi finals and A and B (repechage) finals.

Most of the semi finals (which as well as Edgar, involved Ailbhe Carroll, Chloe Pollard and Erin McConnell – see time codes a little further down) are on the race’s live steam which is well worth watching.

Edgar Sprints to Fifth

Edgar came third in a sprint finish in his semi final (which begins at 1hr 42mins on the livestream) to secure a spot in the final where he faced race favourite and former World Champ Vincent Luis in a 12 man final.

The race was incredibly competitive and predictably close from the starting gun through to the final 1km run when Luis, Spain’s Genis Grau and Csongor Lehman of Hungary pulled 5 secs clear of the field.

After working his way from 9th to 7th during the first 750m of the run, Edgar executed a strong finish to claw back a further two spots on the final stretches of the run and crossed the line 5th – 10secs off race winner Vincent Luis.

Edgar’s race begins at 3hrs 09mins in to the live stream.

Pollard, McConnell and Carroll Make The Semis

Earlier in the day, Chloe Pollard, Erin McConnell and Ailbhe Carroll finished 5th, 6th & 7th respectively in their Repechage finals after making their way through the heats to the semi finals.

Chloe Pollard’s and Erin McConnell’s semis both feature on the live feed at 42mins and 59mins respectively.
