Zwift Winter-Spring League Rnd 12 Results

And so we’ve reached the end of the pixeled road with the Triathlon Ireland Zwift Winter-Spring League!

We hope you’ve enjoyed it – it’s been the longest and most varied Zwift League hosted by Triathlon Ireland so far. Almost 600 members raced across the 12 weeks and importantly more of these were female riders than ever before.

But quite apart from that, the racing has been fantastic, with loads of close battles (no more than 11 points separated the winners of three out of the four women’s leagues!) and some very dedicated triathletes turning up week-in, week-out for a Wednesday night of Type 2 fun!

We asked some of our league leaders for a turbo selfie and a short sentence on how they found the experience – you can check out our turbo gallery here.

Run and Ride 2021

While last night was the final round of this particular league, it won’t be the last. Our current plans are to take a break for the summer and return with a fresh Zwift league in the autumn.

In the meantime our Zwifters can smash their bike legs (and maybe rediscover their run legs?!) on Run and Ride 2021.

It begins next week and will take us all right up to mid May and what we all hope will be the start of a summer of increased opportunities for club training and maybe even races.

Sign Up for Run and Ride 2021, get a six week training plan and join us for a weekend of duathlons on May 15th & 16th!

Round 12

Back to Round 12 and that mammoth race up the mighty Alpe d’Zwift!

It’s a race unlike any other – a fast run to the foot of the mountain and then an agonisingly long but completely intoxicating 1,045m ride to the top! Head off too fast and you will pay dearly on the way up, leave your rivals slip away at the start and you can easily run out of road on your final push.

Well done to our race winners last night: Enda Bagnall, Kevin Derrig, Mary Corless, Caitríona Farrell, Keith Fortune, Stephen Smyth and Miriam Grogan!

As this is the final race of the league, the tables below are also the overall league standings. If you have a query about last night or any round of the league please drop us an email. The league tables will be considered final and closed on Wednesday April 7th at 12noon.

As befits a rider who has utterly dominated his category, Enda Bagnall closed out the league with his eighth victory from 10 races! On both occasions where he didn’t win, Enda Bagnall finished 2nd – he proved his ability across flat races, on the mountains and even in tight sprints. Bagnall finishes the league a very convincing winner of the Men’s A Cat on the maximum available 488 points!

Fifth place last night was enough for Adriele Prina to hang on to his overall second place in the A Category ahead of Mark Farquhar who closes out the league just seven points back in third.

A very close battle for the Women’s B League went right down to the line last night and with eventual league winner Claire Dillon battling second placed Gail Martin all the way up Alpe d’Huez.

Dillon crossed the line ahead of Martin in the a winner-takes-all-contest but only by three seconds – and that was after almost an hour of racing – a fitting finale to an exciting league battle!

Mary Corless swooped in take third place on the final night of the league thanks to her winning performance on Alpe d’Huez (her third race victory in the league)

Overall league winner Oliver Harkin gave a perfect illustration of how consistency wins out everytime. Harkin raced 11 rounds, won three and never came home further down than 4th.

Kevin Derrig showed his prowess on the hills last night to win the race outright and record his first victory in the league.

It wasn’t enough to catch second placed Colm Bellew in the overall standings however, Bellew finishes the league on 421 points and three victories.

Men’s C Cat winner Peter Blissett was able to sit out the final two rounds and still be assured of league victory. With five wins and three second places he scored a very high 473 points – the second highest of any rider across the entire league.

Pat Linehan raced every single round of the league this year and improved his performances with almost every round. He came home fifth last night to hold on to second overall.

With a possible six riders in contention, the real action in the Men’s C Cat was always going to be the battle for third. Keith Fortune made a strong bid for his place on the podium – he was the fastest C league man up the mountain last night but less than a minute later close rival Aiden O’Connor crossed the line for second place. And so it was that both riders finished on 376 points tied for third overall. We knew it was going to be close but not that close!

The Zwift league’s closest battle came to a head last night in a winner takes all race up the mountain. With one point separating Elaine Lally from Roisin Donohoe (and Cathy Cunningham not far behind in 3rd) – Alpe d’Zwift would serve as the ultimate race for glory.

By half eight, after almost 70mins of racing, Elaine Lally crested the summit. She was 5th on the night, but first among her rivals and wins the Women’s C Cat by three points over Roisin Donohoe – an incredibly tight margin after 12 weeks of racing!

Cathy Cunningham takes third after the latest in a string of ultra-consistent top 7 performances throughout the league.

Women’s Cat C – we thank you for the spreadsheet excitement!

What a finish to the league by Miriam Grogan!! After moving from third to second last week, Grogan dramatically won the race by a single second, grabbed the maximum 61 points and with it claimed overall first place in the Women’s D Cat.

Louise McGirl rode strongly for third on the night but only victory could have prevented her from dropping to second where she ends up on 433 points.

Maeve Galloway didn’t race last night but her previous performances were enough to secure her third place overall.

Kevin Hughes didn’t need to race last night to finish off as the winner of the Men’s D Cat. His 48 point haul didn’t increase his total and with second placed Keith Ryan improving his total by a single point, Hughes finishes reasonably comfortably on 468 points.

Last night’s race winner Stephen Smyth finishes in third overall – every round bar one has been won by either Hughes, Ryan or Smyth – a rivalry that’s maybe not as apparent from simply looking at their finishing points.

RESULTS

View the League Table After Round 12

You can see all the race results and dig in to the in-depth data on the race’s ZwiftPower page.

WHY AM I NOT THERE?

If you don’t see your name on either the ZwiftPower race results sheet or the Triathlon Ireland league standings here are some leads to follow up:

FILTERED RIDERS

ZwiftPower will ‘filter’ (aka exclude) any results from riders for a number of reasons, the most common being the absence of a heart rate monitor, a verified power meter or those who entered a power category below their ability/exceeded the W/kg for the power category they entered.

These are automated decisions based on power and made by ZwiftPower not Triathlon Ireland.

While Zwift racing is primarily about having fun, we have a responsibility to ensure that any race that carried our name is also fair so unfortunately if you were excluded or ‘filtered’ it is for a legitimate reason. Filtering is an automatic, data based decision by ZwiftPower designed to ensure an above board race.

We know it can be heart breaking when your HR monitor or Power Meter data fail you in a race but view it like having a mechanical that causes you to pull out of a real life race – it’s unfortunate but not grounds to have your result re-instated.

LEAGUE TABLES

If you are missing from the Triathlon Ireland League Table it is likely for one of two reasons
– You are not assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club on ZwiftPower
– You are not assigned to Triathlon Ireland on ZwiftPower

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club or to Triathlon Ireland (as a club) will be included in the results sheets. If however you are a Triathlon Ireland 2021 member and have been left off for these reasons, drop us an email – we are happy to re-instate you. Please email roisin@triathlonireland.com.

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club will be added to the Club Rankings tables.
