The Year in Review: Club Mixed Relay National Champs
The 2019 Club Mixed Team Relay National Championships saw 27 teams from triathlon clubs around the country take on this exciting format. Held for the third year at Lough Cutra Castle Triathlon, teams consist of two men and two women each racing a 200 metre swim, 5 kilometre bike and 1.5 kilometre run. Mixed Team Relay is fast and furious, and great for spectators to watch!
An Electric Atmosphere
Triathlon has historically been an individual sport but the Club Mixed Team Relay Champs gives triathletes the chance to race on a team! It leads to an exciting and fun atmosphere as club mates get to race together while the rest of the club cheers on.
ennis triathlon club win title
Ennis Triathlon Club’s junior team of Ella Doherty, Daragh O’Neill, Carla Griffin and Sabian Kulczynski took an early lead and never looked under pressure to relinquish it. Transitions are key in the Mixed Team Relay, every second counts, and the young team of triathletes displayed great focus, skill and speed throughout their race. The team won the national title for the first time and had the chance to travel to Portugal to take part in the 2019 Alhandra ETU Triathlon Mixed Relay Clubs European Championships.
Second in this year’s championship was 2018 title holders Belpark Triathlon Club. The team of Maeve Maher-McWilliams, Andy Grehan, Deirdre McNally and David Power saw off stiff competition from third placed Limerick Triathlon Club to take the second step of the podium. Shona Keane, Luke Lyons, Hilkka Kontro and Aaron O’Brien representing Limerick Triathlon Club were third.
