From Athlone to Banyoles: A Club Pathway to the European Stage

Athlone Triathlon Club will host the 2026 National Aquathlon Championships with a powerful example of where a domestic start line can lead.

Fifteen members of Athlone Triathlon Club represented Ireland at the 2026 Europe Triathlon Multisport Championships in Banyoles, making up almost a quarter of the 65-strong Tri Team Ireland squad.

2026 National Aquathlon championships Host

Their appearance on the European stage came less than a year after the club hosted the National Aquathlon Championships and ahead of the event returning to Athlone on 2nd August 2026.

The connection between the two events demonstrates the wider impact of National Championship racing. By bringing major domestic events into clubs and communities, athletes can discover new disciplines, build confidence and begin to see representing Ireland as an achievable goal.

Across a full week of racing in Banyoles, the Irish team competed in Sprint and Standard Duathlon, Cross Triathlon, Cross Duathlon, Aquathlon, Aquabike and Middle Distance Triathlon. For Athlone, seeing 15 friends, training partners, coaches and volunteers progress from racing together at home to representing Ireland together was a particularly proud moment.

From Home Championship to the European Stage

Athlone Triathlon Club hosted the National Aquathlon Championships as part of the Athlone River Festival in 2025, giving members the opportunity to experience national-level racing in their own town.

Competing in familiar surroundings, supported by clubmates, volunteers, family and friends, made the National Championship environment more accessible. For several members, it also helped turn international Age Group racing from a distant ambition into a realistic next step.

Team of 15 Travel to Banyoles

Less than a year later, 15 Athlone athletes travelled together to Banyoles. The group included teachers, lecturers, healthcare professionals, business owners, parents, retirees and students. Some were making their international debut, while others returned with previous experience of representing Ireland.

Their goals varied too. Some travelled with specific performance ambitions, while others wanted to wear the Irish trisuit, experience an international championship and share the occasion with friends and training partners.

Their journey demonstrates the role that strong clubs and high-quality domestic events can play in making the international Age Group pathway more visible and encouraging more athletes to consider where multisport racing could take them.

“Seeing fifteen of our members represent Ireland together in Banyoles was quite surreal. They weren’t just athletes from the same club; they were friends, training partners, coaches and volunteers who have spent countless hours supporting one another over the years. “Hosting the National Aquathlon Championships in Athlone last year gave our members the opportunity to race on home soil at a national level and, for many, it became the springboard to something much bigger. Representing Ireland no longer felt like something reserved for elite athletes. It became a goal that club members could realistically work towards. “What I loved most was how different everyone’s story was. Some were making their international debut, while others returned with more experience. Some were chasing performances, while others simply wanted to enjoy representing their country. “Since Banyoles, we’ve already had members asking about qualification and beginning to think about future European and World Championships. When people see someone they swim beside or train with wearing an Irish trisuit, they start to believe they could do it too. It changes the conversation from ‘people do that’ to ‘maybe I could do that too.’”

National Championship Racing Returns to Athlone

Athlone Triathlon Club will host the National Aquathlon Championships again on Sunday, August 2, as part of the 2026 Athlone River Festival.

The event will include the Sprint and Junior Aquathlon National Championships, welcoming athletes from clubs across Ireland to compete for national titles in the swim-run format.

Delivering a National Championship requires months of preparation from the club committee and a significant volunteer workforce. The impact of the 2025 event, however, demonstrated that its value can extend well beyond race day.

The championships introduced more club members to Aquathlon, made the international pathway more visible and helped inspire a group of athletes who would later represent Ireland in Banyoles.

Athlone Triathlon Club hopes the 2026 event will create the same sense of possibility for another group of athletes.

Multisport in Ireland: From Domestic Racing to the International Stage

Multisport is becoming an increasingly visible part of the Irish racing calendar, giving athletes more ways to participate beyond the traditional swim-bike-run format.

Duathlon combines running and cycling, Aquathlon brings together swimming and running, while Aquabike offers a swim-bike format. Cross Triathlon and Cross Duathlon take racing off-road, and Middle Distance Triathlon provides a longer endurance challenge across all three disciplines.

This variety allows athletes to find a format that suits their strengths, interests and circumstances. It also creates a more accessible pathway into national and international Age Group racing.

2026 Triathlon Ireland programme

The 2026 domestic programme has provided National Championship opportunities across several multisport disciplines:

Phoenix Park Duathlon – April 19: Sprint Duathlon National Championships, hosted by Belpark Triathlon Club
Skerries Aquabike – July 12: Sprint and Junior Aquabike National Championships, hosted by Fingal Triathlon Club
Tri Tyrone – July 19: Middle Distance Triathlon National Championships, hosted by Tri Limits Triathlon Club
Athlone River Fest Aquathlon – August 2: Sprint and Junior Aquathlon National Championships, hosted by Athlone Triathlon Club

Tri-Team Ireland Selection Pathway

Results from relevant 2026 National Championships can form part of the selection pathway for the corresponding 2027 European and World Age Group events, with discipline-specific qualification criteria applying.

Athletes do not need to win their Age Group to consider international racing. They must meet the relevant eligibility, membership and performance requirements and submit an application for their chosen championship. Where applications exceed the number of available places, eligible athletes are ranked through the published selection pathway.

This domestic programme creates a visible connection between club racing, National Championships and the opportunity to represent Tri Team Ireland internationally.

International Opportunities in 2027

The 2027 World Triathlon Multisport Championships will take place in Edmonton, Canada, from July 16–25.

The championships will bring together elite, junior, para and Age Group athletes for ten days of international multisport racing.

Cáceres, Spain and Calahorra to host 2027 Events

At European level, Cáceres in Spain will host the 2027 Europe Triathlon Duathlon Championships, while Calahorra will host the Europe Triathlon Cross Championships. Details of the 2027 European Middle Distance Triathlon, Aquabike and Aquathlon Championships have yet to be announced.

For athletes considering an international goal, the journey can begin much closer to home. Joining a club, trying a new multisport discipline and competing in a National Championship can provide the experience, confidence and results needed to take the next step.

Athlone Triathlon Club has demonstrated how that pathway can work. A National Championship hosted at home helped make international racing more visible and achievable, contributing to 15 club members travelling together to represent Ireland in Banyoles.

As the National Aquathlon Championships return to Athlone, the event is not only an opportunity to compete for an Irish title. For some athletes, it may also be the first step towards a European or World Championship start line in 2027.
