In Hamburg, James Edgar lined up in a stacked Elite Men’s field on Saturday for World Triathlon Championship Series Hamburg, finishing 49th in his second WTCS race of the season.

James returned to action on Sunday, joining Erin McConnell, Hollie Elliott, and Russell White for the Mixed Team Relay race. Hamburg markd the first time that Ireland fielded a team in the Mixed Team Relay World Championships. Unfortunately lapped out on the final leg of the relay, the experience gained in Hamburg has established all important momentum to carry into this weekend’s  European Championships in Melilla, Spain.

2025 Europe Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships, Melilla

The Europe Triathlon Sprint & Relay Championships take place this weekend (19th – 20th July) in Melilla, Spain, and a squad of seven Team Ireland athletes will be racing across the elite, junior and mixed team relay events.

James Edgar | Elite Men

Having finished fourth in Melilla across super-sprint format last year, James Edgar will look to match that performance as he takes on the Elite Men’s Sprint race on Saturday evening.

Hollie Elliott | Elite Women

The race marks Hollie Elliott’s first senior individual championship appearance for Ireland. Elliott has shown strong form in recent European Cup races, racing aggressively from the front, and will look to carry that same approach into this weekend as the competition intensifies in Melilla.

Junior Men | Mathys Bocquet & Senan McDonnell

National Triathlon Centre (University of Limerick) athletes Senan McDonnell and Mathys Bocquet will compete in the Junior Men’s event on Saturday morning after qualifying through selection race Schull Centra Fastnet Triathlon, finishing in first and third place respectively. The pair will be targeting qualification for the Junior World Championships this weekend.

Bocquet & McDonnell will be building on their recent performances, with Senan finishing in P17 at the European Junior Cup in Wels last month, marking his first international race of the season. Mathys finished 19th in Caorle and 23rd in Holten at Junior European Cups.
