Local Technical Official (LTO) Course

We are delighted to announce that places are now available for the March 2025 online Local Technical Official (LTO) course. The course content is covered in short, easy-to-manage online modules which are completed virtually, in your own time, from the comfort of your home. The online course focuses on the fundamentals of officiating, identifying the specific requirements of the role, and introducing soft skills that can help you become a great official.

BEING A TECHNICAL OFFICIAL

Technical Officials (TOs) are essential to triathlon, ensuring that our sport is both safe and enjoyable. Becoming an LTO, or Local Technical Official, is the initial step on the Technical Official Pathway, allowing individuals to officiate at local events.

Officiating is an extremely rewarding way to give back to the sport at a local and national level. It also opens doors to the World Triathlon officiating pathway to travel and officiating at global events, ranging from continental races and World Triathlon Series races to the highest levels of sport, as exemplified by Hugh McAtamney, who served as a Technical Official at the Tokyo Paralympics. See his interview below.

THE COURSE

The self-paced online course consists of 12 quick modules and can be completed at your convenience and take approximately 3-4 hours total to complete. You’ll need to finish the open-book online quizzes following each module by the deadline to qualify for the mandatory virtual live session. This final session, led by a highly experienced official, covers the last part of the course content and gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have. Once you pass the course, you can start officiating at events!
