Rogers Wins Pulse Port Beach Triathlon 2017
Rogers Wins Again
Alastair Rogers won the final round of the 2017 men’s Super Series with convincing victory at Pulse Port Beach triathlon.
Rogers claimed his second Super Series victories of the year on a blustery course at the late season triathlon in Clogerhead, Co. Louth.
The Men’s Race
The men were first in the water at Pulse Port Beach, with 24 athletes lining up on the beach for the 750m swim.
Despite high winds, the sea was relatively calm for the U-shaped course. By the time the swimmers had reached the first buoy at 150m Alastair Rogers, was imposing himself on the race and had opened up a gap on the rest of the field.
The DCT winner extended his lead to 30secs by the time he entered T1.
Behind him, James Walton, Harry Speers and Jonathan Martin came out together with Aichlinn O’Reilly, Darren Dunne and Tom McEnery a further 25secs back.
Rogers Stays Clear
On the bike, Rogers took the brave decision to push on alone despite gusty winds that favoured the draft legal packs. Under his own steam, he biked 30mins 26secs – the second quickest split of the day and completed the 20km course alone.
Only Aichlinn O’Reilly went quicker. His 30mins 11secs split saw him move from the second to the first chase pack and arrive in to T2 with Speers and Walton, after Jonathan Martin dropped back to a larger group about 30secs behind that included McEnery, Dunne, Ben Ryan and Walton.
As with DCT, Rogers never looked back on the run – his 16mins 04secs for the slightly short 5km was enough for him to secure victory in a time of 58mins 48secs.
O’Reilly, McEnery Podium
Aichlinn O’Reilly crossed the line 53secs later to take second place, ahead of the fast finishing Tom McEnery who ran the quickest split of the day (15mins 31secs) to overhaul six athletes and claim third place by eight seconds over James Walton.
