Age Group Selection Guide

Representing Ireland at a World Triathlon or Europe Triathlon Championship is an exciting opportunity open to Triathlon Ireland members of all abilities.

Whether you’re applying for the first time or returning to represent Ireland, this guide explains the complete selection process, from your qualifying race through to accepting your place on Team Ireland.

The process is simple:

Before You Apply

To be considered for selection you must:

Hold a current Triathlon Ireland membership.
Be eligible to represent Ireland under the current World Triathlon Eligibility Rules.
Submit your application before the closing date.
Upload any supporting documents.
Accept your place if selected.

How to Apply

Applications are completed through your Triathlon Ireland account.

To apply:

Log into your Triathlon Ireland account.
Select Age Group Selection Applications.
Choose the Championship.
Complete the online application.
Pay the Age Group Administration Fee.
Upload any required supporting documents.

Applications must be submitted before the published closing date.

Supporting Documents

Depending on your application you may be asked to provide:

Proof of Irish nationality or residency.
Proof of residence outside Ireland (Overseas Athlete pathway only).
Other supporting documentation if requested.

How Athletes Are Selected

World Triathlon allocates Ireland 20 places per gender in each five-year age group for every Championship event.

Once the application deadline has passed, Triathlon Ireland reviews all applications, confirms that each applicant meets the eligibility requirements and determines the order of eligible athletes using the relevant qualification pathway. Selection offers are then issued by email.

In most age groups, fewer than 20 eligible athletes apply, meaning all eligible applicants will normally receive a selection offer.

If more than 20 eligible athletes apply within an age group, selection offers will be made in qualification order until all available places have been allocated.

If a selected athlete declines their place, the offer will be made to the next eligible athlete in the qualification order.

Qualification Pathways

Athletes may qualify through one of the following methods.

National Championship

The National Championship is the primary qualification event for most Championships.

Eligible athletes are ranked according to their finishing position within their World Triathlon five-year age group.

Which National Championship do I need to race?

To be considered for selection to an Age Group team, athletes must complete the relevant Triathlon Ireland National Championship (or other published qualification event).

Please note: The relevant National Championship is normally held in the year before the international Championship. For example, competing in the 2026 Sprint Triathlon National Championships qualifies an athlete to apply for the 2027 Europe Triathlon Sprint Championships and 2027 World Triathlon Sprint Championships.

National Series

Where applicable, National Series performances may also be used for selection.

Eligible athletes are ranked using the published National Series standings.

Overseas Athlete Pathway

Athletes whose primary residence is outside Ireland during the qualification period may apply through the Overseas Athlete pathway.

Applicants may be asked to provide recent race results from recognised events.

After You're Selected

If you receive a selection offer, you will be sent an email containing:

Selection confirmation.
Acceptance deadline.
Championship entry fee information.
Team Ireland trisuit ordering information.
Important athlete deadlines.
Championship information.

Your place is only confirmed once you have accepted your selection offer and completed all required payments before the published deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions

I raced a National Championship. What should I do next?

Submit your Age Group Selection Application before the closing date. Once applications have closed, Triathlon Ireland will review all eligible applications and issue selection offers.

Do I need to win my age group?

No.

World Triathlon allocates Ireland 20 places per gender in each five-year age group. Many athletes who do not win their age group are selected to represent Ireland.

Does submitting an application guarantee selection?

No.

Submitting an application tells Triathlon Ireland you wish to be considered. You must also meet the eligibility requirements and complete the relevant qualification requirements.

How many places are available?

World Triathlon allocates Ireland 20 places per gender in each five-year age group for each Championship event.

What happens if more than 20 athletes apply?

Athletes are ranked using the relevant qualification method and selection offers are made in order until all available places have been allocated.

Can I apply before completing my qualification race?

Applications normally open after the qualification race has taken place. Please check the published application dates for each Championship.

Can I apply for more than one Championship?

Yes.

A separate application must be submitted for each Championship.

How is my age group determined?

Your age group is based on your age on 31 December in the year of the Championship, in accordance with the World Triathlon Competition Rules.

What happens if I decline my place?

Your place will be offered to the next eligible athlete.
