White & Edgar in action at the World Triathlon Cup Chengdu

Russell White and James Edgar were in action at the 2024 World Triathlon Cup Chengdu today in China. The Olympic Distance race featured a two lap lake swim, rolling and technical bike course of six 6.6km laps, and a four lap out and back run. While a small group had gone clear of the main pack of swimmers, both White and Edgar exited the water in close proximity to each other, towards the front of the large second group of athletes racing towards T1.

Out on the bike course, the majority of the breakaway group managed to stay clear of the 26-man chase pack as they tackled the rolling and technical 6.6k laps around Chengdu. Battling hard until the line, the two finished in 29th (White) and 34th (Edgar) to complete a hard day’s racing.

White spoke about his race, “It was a hard race in Chengdu today and strange to be back here after only racing a World Cup on the same course last October. Not the result I was hoping for needing more points to improve my current world ranking but a performance I can be pleased with.

Admittedly my run wasn’t good and that cost me a good result but it was a good boost to be back swimming strong near the front and making the main pack again comfortably, whilst also settling in and feeling strong throughout the bike bike leg. Unfortunately after a good 1st lap of 4 on the run I started to struggle with the heat and possibly taking time to come back to being competitive at this level of racing early in the season but all positive steps in the right direction and leaving in a good head space ready for another World Cup hit out in a few weeks time.”

Edgar also commented on his performance, “It was a difficult day in China, the race was fast across all 3 disciplines and unfortunately my legs didn’t turn up for the run, but there’s still a few more opportunities left before the end of the qualifying window and I hope to make the most of them.”

New Flag Journey

While Azerbaijan’s Pevtsov had a positive race, Edgar can take some confidence knowing that the current New Flag spot holder, Felix Duchampt, finished behind him in the race. With his next race just two weeks away, the 2024 Asia Triathlon Cup Taizhou, China, on the 11th of May, Edgar’s Paris ambitions remain undeterred.

Next Races

Edgar will be joined in Taizhou by fellow Irish athletes Jonathan Oakey and Shannon Kelly. Meanwhile, White’s next focus will be the 2024 World Triathlon Cup Samarkand, Uzbekistan, on the 18th of May, where he’ll be joined by a large Irish contingent who are set to take on the World Triathlon Cup and the World Para Triathlon Cup.
