A weekend of elite racing got off to a difficult start this morning in Lisbon this morning with the Irish team lapped out of the event.

Competing against a truly world class field of athletes including Nicola Spirig, Martin Van Riel and Kristian Blummenfelt, the Irish team was among six from 15 nations that did not ultimately cross the finish line.

A fantastic swim by newcomer Chloe Pollard (welcome Chloe!) saw the team enter T1 in first place but that unfortunately was the high point of the day as the pace proved too fast.

Ultimately, the team which also included Kieran Jackson, Maeve Gallagher and Ian Manthey were lapped out on the Leg 3 Swim Exit.

Attention now turns to the women’s and men’s elite races over the weekend where Carolyn Hayes and Russell White continue their Tokyo quest – read all about it on our race preview.
