Thinking about taking part in triathlon?
Thinking about taking on your first triathlon in 2026? You’re not alone. Every year more people across the island of Ireland decide to challenge themselves with a swim, bike and run – and the good news is that there are plenty of beginner-friendly races designed to help you get started.
Whether you’re aiming for a Try-a-Tri, Super Sprint or simply want to experience multi sport racing for the first time, these events provide welcoming atmospheres, supportive volunteers and manageable distances.

Understanding Triathlon Distances
Before choosing a race, it helps to understand the typical race formats (distances for Try a Tri, Super Sprint and Sprint vary by race).
Try-a-Tri
250m swim (10 laps of a 25m pool)
6km cycle
3km run
Super Sprint
Swim – 400m (16 laps of a 25m pool)
Bike – 10km (6.2 miles)
Run – 2.5km (1.5 miles).
Sprint Distance
750m swim (30 lengths of a 25m pool)
20km cycle
5km run
Standard / Olympic Distance
1500m swim
40km cycle
10km run
Middle Distance
1900m swim
