Covid-19 Update - 18 March 2020

Following last week’s statement postponing events and club training, Triathlon Ireland has been following the situation pertaining to Covid-19 very closely and would like to provide an update for our clubs, athletes and races.

In line with Government, ITU and ETU advice, multisport activities up to and including Thursday, 30 April will be postponed. Last night, the government announced an expected increase in Covid-19 cases, which will inevitably require us all to continue social distancing for a number of weeks.

Triathlon Ireland President Lochlann Walsh said of the recent update;

“While we know the postponement of our triathlon activities for a further month is disappointing for the triathlon community, we are living in unprecedented times and we have to heed the call from our government and health authorities to continue to socially isolate. I've been hugely heartened by the response of our community to date and I know we will continue to support each other and come up with new and innovative ways of training and staying in touch while continuing to follow the advice from the HSE."

"As we manage this crisis as a country, many TI members will be front and centre in protecting us and keeping the country supplied and I'd like to sincerely thank all those members who work in the Health Service, Garda, Army, Transport & Logistics and the Retail sector.  We look forward to cheering you on in happier times.”

CLUB TRAINING

Triathlon Ireland Affiliated Clubs’ training and events will remain suspended until after Thursday, 30 April. We recognise that it is unusual for clubmates to train separately for an extended period of time like this, and are proud of the triathlon community for supporting each other through these times of uncertainty. Triathlon Ireland are confident that the decision to suspend training is in the best interest of the community at this time.

TRIATHLON IRELAND OFFICE

All Triathlon Ireland staff have been working from home since Friday, 13 March and will continue to do so. Our phone lines are still operational and you can contact our staff on their email address. See the full staff directory here.

CHANGES

The Covid-19 situation has the potential to change quickly - if the health authorities change their guidance, Triathlon Ireland will respond accordingly and will quickly inform all clubs, races and other affected parties.

Further information on COVID-19 is available from the government websites on the statement here.
