The 2022 Coaching Masterclass Series

Triathlon Ireland are pleased to launch the 2022 ‘Coaching Masterclass’ series. If you are a coach or aspiring coach, you will hear from experienced world class coaches and athletes on a range of topics over the three weeks. 

WHO CAN ATTEND?

The series is aimed at coaches, but aspiring coaches are also invited to join. Triathlon Ireland members and non-members are welcome. Please see prices & registration link below.

Session One
Paratriathlon: Coach & Athlete Perspectives
Thursday, 20th October 2022

The first webinar in the 2022 Coach Masterclass Series looks at paratriathlon from the coach and athlete perspective.

We will be speaking to Triathlon Ireland Para-triathlete Donnacha McCarthy. Donnacha will share his pathway into sport and into paratriathlon. Donnacha will talk about those who have been instrumental in his journey to top level para-triathlon and about the small but significant adaptations to coaching technique that have made a difference in his training and performance to date.

Jonathon Riall (former Head Coach for the British Triathlon Team and current Head of Performance for the British Paralympic Association) looks at para-sports from a coach’s viewpoint, coaching styles when working with athletes with a disability, and sharing his experiences and learnings in over 13 years of working in this area.


Session Two
Nicola Spirig: Pushing Limits
Wednesday, 26th October 2022

Nicola Spirig boasts one of the most successful career records in international triathlon. Becoming Junior World Triathlon Champion in Edmonton in 2001, Nicola went on to compete in her first Olympic Games in Athens 2004. Competing at top European and International level, she is seven-time European Champion and won Olympic Gold at London 2012 and Silver at Rio 2016.

We are very excited to welcome Nicola to the Masterclass Series to share her sporting journey.


Session Three
The Psychology behind Transitioning to Longer Distances

Dr. Ciara Losty
Wednesday 9th November
19:30 – 21:00

Leading Sport Psychologist, Dr. Ciara Losty, joins us to talk about the psychology behind taking the step to racing the to longer distances.

One of the challenges of coaching athletes is to help them to transition to longer distance races when they decide to take on the challenge, to recognise when they are ready to do so, and to support them in their journey.

Speaker Bios

Jonathan Riall

Jonathon is the Head of Performance for the British Paralympic Association, responsible for supporting the performance plans for all paralympic sports at both the summer and winter Paralympic Games.

Previous to this, Jonathon was the founder, head coach and Team Leader for the British Paratriathlon Team at the British Triathlon Federation. Founding the elite programme for Paratriathletes in 2009, Jonathon has over 13 years of experience of every aspect of the sport, from event delivery, coach education, through to coaching and the Paralympic Games.

A strong advocate for disability and paralympic sport along with Triathlon, Jonathon is passionate about sharing his love for this area.

Donnacha McCarthy

Donnacha McCarthy is a vision impaired Paratriathlete competing in the PTVI classification and has been involved in  paratriathlon since 2016. He has been a part of the Triathlon Ireland High Performance programme since 2018 competing in a number of international events across the world accumulating a number of World Cup podiums as well as World and European titles in Aquathlon and Duathlon.

Currently ranked in the top 10 in the world rankings he has his eyes set firmly on qualification for the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games.

Dr. Ciara Losty

Dr Cíara Losty is a lecturer in applied sport and exercise psychology in South East Technological University and course leader for the MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Psychology programme. Cíara is accredited as a Professional Member by the Sport Institute Ireland  Professional Quality Assurance Committee in in the area of high performance sport psychology delivery. Cíara was part of Team Ireland sport science and medical team for the Tokyo 2020 and London 2012  Olympic. Cíara was appointed Transition Psychology Senior Consultant for Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games and  provided onsite support to the Irish Eventing team. In 2022 Cíara was appointed as the team sport psychologist to the Irish Paralympic team for Paris 2024. Since 2017, Cíara has been the sport psychologist for the jockey pathway and works with all licenced professional and amateur jockeys in Ireland. The Jockey Pathway  provides sport science and sport psychology support to all jockeys. Cíara completed a Doctor of Health Sciences in Psychology through the University of Wales, a MSc in Psychology at Glyndwr University,  a MSc (by research) in sport and exercise psychology, in WIT, a Cert. Cognitive Behavioural Skills for Practice (Level 8) and a BA (hons).
