AWARDS VOTING

Voting is now open for the 2022 Triathlon Ireland Annual Awards.

The awards recognise the best achievements and most inspiring people across all sectors of our sport in 2022, from High Performance to domestic racing, volunteers, clubs and coaches.

A total of fourteen awards will be decided – many by public vote.

The deadline for voting in all awards and for submissions is Wednesday 19th October.

All awards will be presented at the prestigious Triathlon Ireland Annual Awards Night. The popular get-together returns after a three-year absence at The Alex Hotel, Dublin on Saturday, 12th November 2022.

1. CAROLINE KEARNEY AWARD

The Caroline Kearney Award is given annually to recognise exceptional contribution to the sport of triathlon by a female athlete.

The award is decided by a panel consisting of Triathlon Ireland’s President, CEO, Edith Kearney and Women’s Participation Lead.


2. CLUB OF THE YEAR 

The Club of the Year award seeks to identify triathlon clubs – be it small, medium or large – which have performed in an outstanding manner over the course of the last 12 months. 

The award will be decided by a panel of Triathlon Ireland staff members and a representative from another national federation on foot of nominations from clubs.

Judges shall consider the following criteria:

  • Evidence of Good Governance
  • Evidence of Community Engagement
  • Evidence of Club Activity and Membership Support

3. JUNIOR CLUB OF THE YEAR*

*The Junior Club of the Year awards will be hosted at our Youth Awards day which will be confirmed in due course. All 16 – 17 Youth Athletes are invited to the awards and will be presented with their awards at both ceremonies. These athletes must be accompanied by a parent.

The Junior Club of the Year is a new award for 2022 and seeks to identify triathlon clubs – be it small, medium or large – which have performed in an outstanding manner to its Junior members over the course of the last 12 months. 

The award will be decided by a panel of Triathlon Ireland staff members and a representative from another national federation on foot of nominations from clubs.

Judges shall consider the following criteria:

  • Safeguarding
  • Community Engagement
  • Club Activity & Membership Support

4. CLUB COACH OF THE YEAR 

The club coach of the year award is open to all Triathlon Ireland qualified club coaches. In line with the Triathlon Ireland strategic plan which centres around club development and sustainability this award aims to highlight those who are coaching in clubs and contributing to the growth and development of their club and it’s members through their coaching support. 

Nominees must be a member of TI, hold a TI coaching qualification and have all necessary safeguarding criteria up to date.

Clubs can nominate their coach by contacting their club chairperson who will be sent a link directly via email.

The outcome will be decided by a panel of two TI staff and an external panel member in a coach education role from another NGB.


5. HALL OF FAME 

The Triathlon Ireland Hall of Fame serves to recognise, honour and commemorate those individuals, groups and entities that have demonstrated excellence in multisport and inspire others to elevate their performance, participation and involvement in multisport.

CATEGORIES OF ELIGIBILITY

Elite athletes

An athlete shall be eligible for nomination in this category if he or she, while licensed as an elite athlete by Triathlon Ireland, competed with great success in national or world events over a period of years; demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship, and contributed in other ways to the betterment of multisport. Achievements in all disciplines governed by Triathlon Ireland may be considered. To be nominated, an elite athlete must have not competed as an elite athlete for at least three years prior to consideration.

Age-Group Athletes

An athlete shall be eligible for nomination in this category if the athlete, while licensed as an age group athlete by Triathlon Ireland, competed with great success in major national or world events over a period of years; demonstrated outstanding sportsmanship; and contributed in other ways to the betterment of multisport. Achievements in all disciplines governed by Triathlon Ireland may be considered.

Contributor

This category is intended to encompass a broad array of people and activities associated with the disciplines governed by Triathlon Ireland. A contributor shall be eligible in this category:

A. If he or she has made significant contributions to the growth, reputation, character, and/or success of any of the disciplines governed by Triathlon Ireland. Contributions in a wide variety of categories may be considered, including, but not limited to sport pioneer; event organiser; event official; coach; volunteer; and/or service to the governing body;

or,

B. If a person made a single or brief, but significant and unique contribution to any of the disciplines governed by Triathlon Ireland.

Selection Panel (three people – with minimum of one of each gender)

  • President TI or nominated representative
  • CEO of TI or nominated representative
  • Community Representative (From TI sub-committee or from TI Club Chairs)

6. HIGH PERFORMANCE ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

High Performance Athlete of the Year is open to any athlete who has finished in the Top 15% of the Elite or Professional field at an Elite World Triathlon or Europe Triathlon event, SuperLeague, Ironman or Challenge, or other similar international standard multi-sport event.

Athletes who have broken national records or surpassed previous best Irish results on the professional triathlon circuit will also be considered.

In addition, athletes who have had significant international results may be considered.

The award will be decided by a panel of staff members from Triathlon Ireland’s High Performance Unit.


7. HIGH PERFORMANCE JUNIOR ATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Athletes eligible for Junior Athlete of the Year are those who have finished as the first junior athlete in the 2022 National Championships, in the 2022 National Aquathlon Championships, in the 2022 National Duathlon Championships or have finished in the top 15% of the field at an World Triathlon race. In addition, athletes who have had significant international results may be considered. 

The award will be decided by a panel of staff members from Triathlon Ireland’s High Performance Unit.


8. PARA TRIATHLETE OF THE YEAR

Paratriathlete of the Year will be awarded to an athlete who has shown exceptional performance in an individual race or series of races over the 2022 season.

The award will be decided by a panel from Triathlon Ireland’s High Performance Unit.

Athletes who have broken national records or surpassed previous best Irish results on the professional triathlon circuit will also be considered.

In addition, athletes who have had significant international results may be considered.

The award will be decided by a panel of staff members from Triathlon Ireland’s High Performance Unit.


9. RACE OF THE YEAR

Any race which hosted a Major Event  in 2022 shall be eligible for the Race of the Year Award.

The award will be decided by a mixture of public vote, technical criteria, marketing activation and  a panel of Triathlon Ireland staff members The technical criteria will consist of Event Organisation (submission of event plan; quality of marshals, transition,finish line and entertainment); Technical Officials report, Race Marketing, Communication with Triathlon Ireland and race officials and speed of submission of race results.

The overall award criteria will consist of:

  • Public Voting – 25%
  • Technical TO Report – 25%
  • Events Staff Panel – 25%  
  • Marketing Activation  – 25%

10. JUNIOR RACE OF THE YEAR*

*The Junior Race of the Year awards will be hosted at our Youth Awards day which will be confirmed in due course. All 16 – 17 Youth Athletes are invited to the awards and will be presented with their awards at both ceremonies. These athletes must be accompanied by a parent.

All Youth Series and Junior National Championship races in 2022 shall be eligible for the Junior Race of the Year Award.

The award will be decided by a mixture of public vote, event experience, Club Activity & Membership Support.

The overall award criteria will consist of:

  • Public Voting 
  • Event Experience
  • Safeguarding
  • Community Engagement

11. SPIRIT OF TRIATHLON  

This award recognises those individuals who illustrate the principles of the positive spirit of the sport as displayed through acts of sportsmanship and leadership in multisport, with no deference to athletic ability. 

Any current Triathlon Ireland member shall be eligible for nomination in this category and can include (but is not limited to); athletes, coaches, volunteers, technical officials, club committee members and race directors. 

The nominee should be someone who fits one or more of the following criteria:

  • embodies the spirit of the sport, contributing with a selfless, inclusive attitude;
  • has achieved something extraordinary within or because of triathlon;
  • has overcome the odds to be involved in triathlon;
  • has inspired others to strive for their personal best within triathlon.

Nominations should be a written or a video entry. Written entries should be 300 to 600 words in length and videos should be no more than four minutes in length. Entries should outline why this Triathlon Ireland member should be recognised with this award.

Communication will be sent from Triathlon Ireland via the following channels to generate nominations for the award:

  • email sent to all Club Secretaries outlining the award and the award nomination process;
  • Triathlon Ireland website;
  • Social Media Campaign.

12. Tri-Team Ireland International AGE GROUP AWARD

The Tri-Team Ireland Age Group award seeks to recognise an individual athlete who has shown commitment, team spirit, outstanding performance or contribution during a World Triathlon or Europe Triathlon event.

Any athlete who has represented Tri-Team Ireland at an International World Triathlon or Europe Triathlon event in 2022 is eligible. 

The award is decided according to the above criteria by a panel of Triathlon Ireland staff members and Tri-Team Ireland volunteers. 


13. TECHNICAL OFFICIAL OF THE YEAR

All qualified Triathlon Ireland Officials who have been appointed to a National Series, National Championship, or International Major Event in the preceding season are eligible for this award.

The panel will include the Technical Programme Exec & Tech Comm Chair. 

The award will be allocated based on an Official’s communication, fairness, and commitment to the role.


14. VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR

The Volunteer of the Year Award aims to shine a light on the remarkable work of volunteers around the country by celebrating them on a national level. The awards is a unique opportunity to say ‘thank you’ to ordinary people doing extraordinary work across the country. 

Any current member of Triathlon Ireland is eligible to win this award, which will be decided by a panel of Triathlon Ireland staff members.  

Nominations are open to the public and should include a maximum 250 words outlining the extraordinary work done by your selected volunteer.

In your nomination, List how this person has contributed to the club and why you feel they deserve to be Volunteer of the Year.
