Triathlon Ireland Releases Concussion Protocol

Triathlon Ireland is pleased to release its first set of Concussion Protocol & Guidelines. These new guidelines are designed for use within the sport at all levels, and provide information on how to recognise concussion and on how it should be managed from the time of injury through to a safe return to education, work and playing sport.

This information is intended for the general public and for individuals participating in all grassroots sports, primary school age and upwards, where Healthcare Professionals are typically not available onsite to manage concussed individuals.

The guidelines have been developed by a steering group led by National Events Co-Ordinator Julie Dunne, with inputs from Technical Officials, Athletes, Coaches, Club Leads and Medical Experts.

These guidelines are an important new development for the sport, as outlined by Triathlon Ireland Operations Manager Orla Nugent;

“For the first time, our sport has published a set of guidelines for the community around recognising and managing concussion. This is an evidence based document which, while not constituting medical advice, provides a template for referral by the community. Many of our community are acting in a voluntary capacity at events and training sessions, and this document adds a level of support for both volunteers and triathletes.”

NOTE: The Triathlon Ireland Concussion Protocol document contains general medical information, but this does not constitute medical advice and should not be relied on as such. Nor is the guidance a substitute for medical advice from a qualified medical practitioner or healthcare provider. You must not rely on this guidance as an alternative to seeking medical advice from a qualified medical practitioner or healthcare provider. In particular, if you have any questions or concerns about a particular medical matter you should immediately consult a qualified medical practitioner or healthcare provider. You should never delay seeking medical advice, disregard medical advice or discontinue medical treatment because of information contained in this guidance.
