2025 The Year in Review: Sprint National Championships

CELEBRATING OUR AGE GROUP sprint national champS

  • Distance: 750m swim • 20m bike • 5km run
  • Date: 12 July 2025
  • Event: Two Provinces, hosted by Lanesboro Tri Club
  • Location: Lanesborough, Longford

The 2025 Sprint National Championships delivered an action-packed day of racing in Lanesborough, Longford, where stacked fields competed for National Sprint Distance titles, valuable Triathlon Ireland National Series points, and Age Group National Championships.

Over 700 triathletes descended on Lanesborough on 12 July 2025 for a thrilling day of racing – that featured Draft-Legal Sprint Distance National Championships, and the Age Group National Championships – as well as a round of the Triathlon National Series!

With blue skies, wall-to-wall sunshine and temperatures soaring into the high 20’s, hosts Lanesboro Tri Club rose to the occasion – providing extra water stations and sprinklers to help keep athletes cool throughout the event.

In the draft-legal Sprint Distance National Championships, Jack Kennedy and Emma O’Brien delivered standout performances in the heat, to claim the men’s and women’s Sprint distance national titles respectively. They led a remarkable day of racing that also saw competitors crowned Age Group Sprint Distance National Champs and gain valuable points in the Triathlon National Series.

The Two Provinces race also served as a  qualification race for Tri Team Ireland, offering athletes the chance to represent their country at the 2026 European Championships in Pontevedra, Spain.

Jack Kennedy Crowned Men’s Sprint National Champion

Jack Kennedy produced a dominant performance to win the Men’s National Sprint Distance Championship in 58:50. Emerging from a 750m swim in Lough Ree, Jack led from the start, emerging from the swim with a commanding 9:32 split, the group worked together on the bike across the draft-legal 20km fast and flat bike course on closed roads and 5km run out from the quarry – under the welcome shade of a  woodland trail and continuing through flat terrain to the finish.

Just seconds behind was Junior Patrick Cole who completed the course in 59:11 – and just one second behind him in third place was Evan Tosh with a breakthrough performance.

The Men’s top three were:

  1. Jack Kennedy 58:50
  2. Patrick Cole 59:11
  3. Evan Tosh 59:12

Full results and age group podiums are listed below.

Emma O’Brien Wins National Title for Sprint

The women’s championship proved equally exciting, with Emma O’Brien continuing her excellent form to capture the National Sprint Distance title in impressive style.

With a static start in the water, O’Brien exited the swim in 10:23, just two seconds ahead of Saoirse O’Brien from Piranha TC. Saoirse responded strongly on the bike with the pair working together on the draft legal course.  Emma made her move and gapped Saoirse O’Brien in the opening metres of the the run course, producing a 18:50 split to hold her lead and secure the win. Meanwhile Katie Youp delivered a strong closing run powering through the field to claim the final podium position.

The women’s top three were:

  1. Emma O’Brien (Wicklow TC) 1:02:06
  2. Saoirse O’Brien (Piranha TC) 1:06:55
  3. Katie Youp 1:06:55

Junior National Championship

The Junior National Championship (part of the Draft-legal race) also showcased impressive performances – in the Junior Women’s race, Chloe Young claimed victory with a time of 1:09:00, followed by Aoibheann Ryan in 1:10:21 and Eve Burns in 1:12:55.

In the Junior Men’s race, Patrick Cole took gold in 59:11, narrowly edging out Evan Tosh by one second, with Sean McMahon finishing third in 59:34. Both races were closely contested, highlighting the real strength and emerging talent of Ireland’s Junior Triathletes.
