  • Distance: 1.5km swim • 40km bike • 10km run
  • Date: Saturday 10th August  2025
  • Event: Top of the Mourne Triathlon, hosted by Newry Triathlon Club
  • Location: Rostrevor, County Down

Top triathletes from across the island of Ireland descended on Carlingford Lough and Kilbroney Park on 10th August for the 2025 Triathlon Ireland National Standard Distance Championships – a sold-out event featuring more than 420 athletes battling for elite and age group national titles. Conditions were grey and overcast, with some wind across Carlingford Lough and mild temperatures – good conditions for racing, even if the sun never quite broke through the cloud.

Russell White and Hollie Elliott delivered dominant performances to claim the men’s and women’s standard distance national titles respectively – but they weren’t the only winners on the day with Age Group Champions being crowned for stand-out performances in the Standard distance race.

White Crowned Men’s National Champ

Olympian Russell White made a powerful return to domestic racing, winning his first National Standard Distance title since 2022. The Banbridge man led from the start, emerging from the Carlingford Lough swim with a commanding 76-second advantage over his nearest rival.

From there, White extended his lead on familiar home roads, navigating a newly adapted 40km bike course affected by local road closures.

“The bike was phenomenal,” said White. “As a Banbridge boy, these are my home roads – I’m used to those hills and feel right at home here.”

He finished in 2:09:23, over five minutes clear of second place.

The Men’s top three were:

  1. Russell White (2:09:23)
  2. Adam Ward (2:14:34) Strabane TC
  3. Matthew Kinkaid (2:15:28) Newry TC

Elliott Wins First National Title

The women’s championship proved equally exciting, with Hollie Elliott securing her first-ever national title in impressive style.

Elliott, who has enjoyed standout performances on the international circuit this season, led from the start after exiting the swim over a minute ahead of the field among the leading men’s chase pack.

Emma O’Brien clocked the fastest bike split of the day to close the gap, while Becky Woods surged through the field to claim the final podium position.

On the challenging two-lap 10km run through Kilbroney Park – famed for its CS Lewis “Narnia” trails – Elliot said: “That was one of the toughest run courses I’ve ever done!”

Top of Mourne Podium Female Winners 2025

  2.  Emma O’Brien (Wicklow TC) 2:23:48
  3.  Becky Woods (Piranha TC) 2:29:36
