2025 Year in Review: Middle Distance National Champs
2025 Year in Review: Middle Distance National Championships
The 2025 Middle Distance National Championships brought intense competition to a course renowned for its flat profile and fast times. Over 300 athletes lined up for a 9am start, drawing some of Ireland’s most competitive triathletes and resulting in course records across both the men’s and women’s fields.
- Distance: 1.9km swim • 90km bike • 21.1km run
- Date: 27th July 2025
- Event: Tri-Tyrone, hosted by TriLimits Triathlon Club
- Location: Dungannon, County Tyrone
Athletes battled for podium positions and age-group national titles across two laps of the lake. With the water warm, clear and with no rain in sight, conditions were great for racing.
Becky Woods and David Higgins delivered dominant performances to secure the women’s and men’s Middle Distance National Championship titles respectively. They led a day filled with standout efforts and several age group champions being crowned for exceptional performances.
Becky Woods Wins Middle Distance National Title
Becky Woods claimed her second consecutive Middle Distance Championship title, building on her 2024 victory at Lost Sheep. Despite early pressure from Aoibh Clarke who led after the swim and bike, Woods powered through the run course to take the win and set a new course record of 4: 23:36, breaking the previous benchmark. Aisling Wyer pushed hard during the run to clinch second place just split seconds ahead of Clarke.
The women’s top three were:
- Becky Woods (Piranha Tri Club) 4:23:36
- Aisling Wyer (Naas TC) 4:25:26
- Aoibh Clarke 4:25:51

David Higgins Crowned Men’s National Middle Distance Champ
The men’s championship was fiercely contested, with GB athlete Malachi Cashmore setting a blistering pace on the fast, flat course to cross the line first. With Cashmore ineligible to win the National Title, the battle to become 2025 National Champ was taking place behind him.
David Higgins delivered a superb all-round performance to claim the men’s National Middle Distance Championship. Higgins combined a strong swim, a powerful two hour, three minute bike leg to secure the title.
The Men’s top three were:
- David Higgins 3:52:24
- Adam Ward (Strabane TC) 3:57:02
- Matthew Kinkaid (Newry TC) 3:59:04
