Triathlon Ireland WIS Programme Receives Sport Ireland Funding

Triathlon Ireland’s ambition to increase the number of women in leadership and technical official roles has received a boost, with recently announced Sport Ireland funding for 2021 and 2022. The successful ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ Women in Sport programme will receive €70,000 each year of the funding period. In recent years, the programme has been fundamental in increasing female participation in the sport.
Speaking at the Sport Ireland announcement; Sport Ireland Women in Sport Lead Nora Stapleton said;
“2020 was a difficult year and like all areas across the sector, many Women in Sport programmes and events were curtailed or had to be redesigned. Many programmes will continue in to 2021 and the NGBs have submitted applications for many new, innovative and exciting projects for the next cycle and I look forward to working with them”.
This funding will be used by Triathlon Ireland to enable the exciting Beyond the Finish Line Women in Sport Strategy. This important strategy aims to increase female participation in triathlon, and outlines plans to encourage more women to take leadership roles within the triathlon community. Triathlon Ireland Women in Sport Lead Ailbhe Carroll explains;
“We are absolutely delighted with the WIS Sport Ireland funding announcement for Triathlon Ireland. Women in Sport is such an exciting and fast progressing area right now, and this funding will help women in sport to reach a greater level. There are so many different areas within WIS that will benefit from this, from female coaches and technical officials to young athletes and much, much more. Triathlon Ireland’s fantastic ‘Beyond the Finish Line’ Strategy is in place for the next two years and this funding will allow that strategy to be delivered at a high standard.”
Triathlon Ireland CEO Darren Coombes outlines the importance of the funding to the organisation, and how this will fit into the new ‘Transform Together 2021 – 2028’ strategy;
“As a sport, gender equality is embedded in our DNA. In partnership with our clubs, Triathlon Ireland has delivered real return on investment for Sport Ireland against National Sports Policy objectives. We have embedded gender diversity in our Constitution and worked in partnership with a number of other National Federations on leadership development and high performance coach development programmes that will deliver the next generation of female leaders in our sport.”
“We are enormously proud of what we have achieved in this space, but this significantly increased investment as we launch our new Strategy will allow us to build on those achievements and further impact and transform the lives of our female athletes, coaches, officials and leaders.”
