Siobhan Kennedy Wins Age Group Gold

Waterford’s Siobhán Kennedy has won Age Group Gold for Ireland at the 2021 World Duathlon Championships in Aviles, Spain!
Nine athletes representing TriTeam Ireland took part in the weekend’s competition across sprint and standard distance duathlon on the tough Aviles course. You can view all their results below or on triathlon.org here.
Kennedy Thrilled with World Champs Medal
A triathlete for the last decade, this is Siobhan’s second event as a member of Tri Team Ireland. Kennedy is two for two, and absolutely delighted about it. Siobhan won her first gold medal in her first ever competition as an International Age Group athlete in the 2020 Punta Umbria ETU Duathlon European Championships.
Taking the win in her 55-59 Age Group over the standard distance course wasn’t a given for Kennedy, and she fought hard out on course;
“I’m over the moon. Coming out to it I was saying it would be great to stand on the podium but I mean to win was the absolute icing on the cake. When I came out here and looked at the level of competition, I really wasn’t expecting to stand on the top spot of the podium so I’m absolutely delighted, thrilled, thrilled!”

Although chilly on the morning, the athletes weren’t long in warming up on the challenging course;
“The course was a lovely course, it was challenging. The run course was practically flat there was a few drags, a few uphills on it but nothing major. An awful lot of sharp turns so you had to have your wits about you. The bike course was challenging, for me it was a very technical course. One of those courses where you had to be mentally alert throughout the whole race. There was one climb on it, broken down into four sharp inclines. It was a two lap course so you had that twice. A lot of people found it challenging. Overall it was a lovely course, a very fair course and I have to say I really, really enjoyed it.”
Siobhan on donning the Tri Team Ireland Age Group trisuit;
“I think it’s something very, very special to actually wear the Irish gear. When you’re brought into that holding area and you know that you’re there with the Irish gear on you, you’re not only representing yourself and your family, you’re representing your country. I think there’s something extra special about that.”
