Road To Paris: World Triathlon Para Cup Yenisehir

Donnacha McCarthy and guide Sean Husband were back in action at the 2024 World Triathlon Para Cup Yenisehir, Turkey, over the weekend, as they continue their chase for a Paralympic spot this summer.

With water temperatures in excess of 28° wetsuits were forbidden, however, McCarthy was content with the duo’s swim before heading out on to what he described as an “overall a flat and fast course.”

A strong bike leg saw the duo in contention for a podium, but were narrowly pipped for the podium by Serbian athlete Lazar Filipovic.

The duo will take positives and negatives from the experience, as they hold 11th in the Paralympic Qualification Ranking. With the Top 9 securing a slot in Paris, Husband acknowledged that, “the level is getting raised every year. We are improving but so is everyone else. Over the next few races, it will be a dog fight to qualify.”

The pair will now set their focus on the upcoming 2024 World Triathlon Para Series Yokohama on the 11th of May.

Also in action in Yenisehir was rising Irish Para Triathlon talent Tom Williamson. Williamson left
the field behind during the swim, and maintained a dominant lead off the bike. He unfortunately suffered a stitch on the run, causing him to lose time to his competitors and finish less than 30 seconds shy of the podium.

Williamson will also compete at the World Triathlon Para Series Yokohama in May. The team will be joined by both Chloe and Judith MacCombe as they both seek to secure spots in the Women’s PTVI category.
