Preview: Para Triathlon Team at the World Champs

After a stunning team performance at last week’s World Triathlon Para Cup Alhandra, the Team Ireland para triathletes are in action again, this time at the 2021 World Triathlon Para Championships Abu Dhabi.

Ready to Race

Course familiarisation is now complete for the team. Triathlon Ireland’s Para Triathlon Technical Director Eamonn Tilley is with the team in Abu Dhabi, and says all are looking forward to putting in their best performances;

“The preparation are going well, the team has acclimated over the last number of days, we have even managed to train on the famous  Yas Marina Grand Prix circuit which is the bike course.”

“All the team are very excited and delighted to have the opportunity to race in the Para Triathlon World Championships in Abu Dhabi where the best of the best compete for the grand prize. Following on from an excellent result in Portugal, our goals are simply to build on recent performances, increase our World Ranking places and showcase the depth of the Irish para triathlon team as we build and develop on the road to Paris 2024 and beyond.”

McCarthy, MacCombe & Gunning in PTVI Category

Coming off the back of World Cup medal performance, Donnacha McCarthy and Guide Sean Husband will be looking to make their mark again in a World Class PTVI field. Oliver Gunning and Guide Stephen Teeling-Lynch also race in this category, building important international experience for junior para triathlete Gunning.

Having made the podium for the first time last week, Chloe MacCombe and Guide Catherine Sands are on a high and ready to test themselves against a stacked women’s field of World Champions and Paralympians.

Mark Millar races in the PTWC Category and will certainly carry confidence from his silver medal career best at last week’s World Cup in Alhandra, he has been listed by World Triathlon as one to watch!

In the Men’s PTS5 Class, experienced para triathlete Aidan McGlynn makes a return to the championship stage for the first time since 2017.
