McCarron & McDonnell Top Ten in Africa Triathlon Cup Ebotse

Luke McCarron and Senan McDonnell have finished in ninth and tenth respectively at the Africa Triathlon Cup Ebotse in South Africa. The Team Ireland pair finished the sprint distance course with just 15 seconds separating them.

Luke McCarron finished ninth in his third race of the season, having complete P16 at Africa Triathlon Cup El Galala and P25 at the Asia Triathlon Cup Putrajaya during February.

Commenting on Sunday’s performance, Luke said:

“I am pleased with my performance today and the improvement I’m seeing race to race. Unfortunately I made a couple of errors in T1 which left me outside the front pack on the bike and the fight for the medals. However, I was happy with my fitness across all three disciplines and I am looking forward to the next opportunity.”

National Triathlon Centre athlete Senan McDonnell was in his 2026 season opener, and senior international debut.

McDonnell’s last outing of 2025 saw him finishing third in his final international race as a junior at Europe Triathlon Junior Cup Alanya.

Sunday’s race saw Senan McDonnell building valuable experience at the level, and leading the field out of the swim. Commenting after the race Senan said:

“Had a great start to the swim and managed to get to the first buoy in the lead. From there I kept the pace high and opened up a small gap on the field by the end of the swim.”

“The bike was honest and fast, with the pace staying high throughout and I came off it in a strong position heading into the run. Unfortunately I picked up a bad stitch early on the run which made things tough but I carried on through it to the finish to secure a top ten in my first senior race. Definitely things to work on but there were plenty of positives from the weekend nonetheless.”
