How Does a Paralympic Triathlete Qualify for the Paris Paralympic Games?

The Paralympics qualification process is a 12 month period which began on July the 1st 2023 and concludes on July the 1st 2024. The qualification process is based upon the athletes’ top three results from World Para Triathlon Series events, World Para Triathlon Championship Finals, World Para Triathlon Cup events, and the athletes own respected Continental Championships.

120 slots are up for grabs. 54 of these for men and 50 of these for women, with 16 remaining gender free. These 16 slots will be selected by the International Paralympic Committee and World Triathlon through the Bipartite Commission Invitation process.

Within the Men’s Paralympic Triathlon competition there are 6 medal events, which include the following sporting categories:

• PTWC
• PTS2
• PTS3
• PTS4
• PTS5
• PTVI

With 54 slots and 6 medal events, this means the top 9 ranked athletes within the World Triathlon Paralympics rankings in each category qualify for a slot for the Paralympic Games. The athlete qualifies a slot for their National Paralympic Federation with a maximum quota of 2 athletes per National Federation.

The Women’s Paralympic Triathlon process is similar to that of their male counterparts, with the exception that the PTS3 and PTS4 categories are amalgamated. Here the top 9 PTS4 athletes and the top 5 PTS3 ranked athletes in the World Triathlon Paralympic Qualification rankings will qualify a slot for their respected National Paralympic Federation and compete in the same medal event.
