Flavin & Behan Winners in Tramore

Wind and rain greeted the 300 athletes setting up in transition and preparing for the second duathlon of the year at the Advantage Engineering Tramore Duathlon yesterday.
The fast and flat course consists of a 5k run, 18k bike and then a 3.7k run through Tramore town and along the promenade to finish. The conditions would prove to be the bigger challenge on the morning, adding an extra element for athletes to conquer.

Flavin Wins Season Opener
The battle between Dungarvan Tried and Tested’s Marc Flavin and Enda Bagnall was on from the start in a season opening race for the pair.

Coming into T1 together and onto the bike just seconds apart, Flavin opened a 35 second gap on the 18 kilometre out and back course. Knowing that Eden Tri’s Bagnall would be chasing him down on the second run, it was important for Flavin to solidify this lead, and he did.
Marc Flavin put in the quickest second run split of the day to hold the lead all the way to the finish line. East Cork Tribe’s Jordan Dunne was solid throughout to hold third place.

Behan Wins Home Event
Waterford Triathlon Club athletes showed strong form in their home race on Saturday, posting first and second placings in the women’s race.
Entering T1 it was all to play for with just seconds separating the top five or six women. Joan Mahony led into transition with Diane Behan, Chloe Bennett, Siobhan Kennedy and Clare Burke all in the mix at this point.

Putting in the fastest bike split of the field by over 60 seconds, it was here that Waterford’s Diane Behan opened up her lead. Siobhan Kennedy and Chloe Bennett were next on the road and it was between these two that the remaining podium places would be decided.
Junior athlete Bennett put everything into the second run to carve out a six second lead and secure second place and her first Duathlon National Series podium. Siobhan Kennedy finished third in 1:08:49.
