National Champs Duathlon - Bikes racked at start

2025 Year in Review: Duathlon National Champs

duathlon age group winners announced

The 2025 Duathlon National Championships marked a thrilling start to Triathlon Ireland’s 2025 competitive calendar, as over 200 multisport athletes descended on Limerick for a fast and fiercely contested race.

  • Distance: 4.6km run – 19km bike – 4km run
  • Date: 02.03.25
  • Event: Duathlon (run-bike-run), hosted by Limerick Triathlon Club
  • Location: University of Limerick (UL)

The event showcased exceptional performances across both the men’s and women’s fields, with returning champions reclaiming glory and new talents making their mark on a bright and dry March morning.

Niall Cornyn and Saoirse O’Brien delivered standout performances to claim the men’s and women’s Duathlon National titles respectively – but they weren’t the only winners on the day with Age Group Champions being crowned for stand-out performances in the Duathlon.

Men’s Race

In the men’s event, Niall Cornyn led from the start to reclaim the national title he last won in 2022. After a strong opening run, Cornyn maintained control despite pressure from a chase pack that included Leo Corry, Mathys Bocquet, and Michael Bruton. On the bike, Dave Higgins posted the fastest split of the day, closing the gap before National Triathlon Centre athlete Bocquet, representing Predator TC, mounted a late surge to take second place. Bruton finished strongly on the final run to secure third, completing an impressive podium and underlining the depth of talent in the men’s field.

Women’s Race

The women’s championship was equally intense, with Saoirse O’Brien of Piranha Triathlon Club emerging as the 2025 National Champion after a fiercely fought contest. Early leader Zoe Hughes set the pace out of the first transition, but O’Brien, Megan Roberts, and Áine Kinsella soon took control on the bike leg. The closing stages delivered a nail-biting finish, as Kinsella and Roberts battled to close down O’Brien’s lead. In the final hundred metres, just eight seconds separated the top three, with O’Brien holding on for victory ahead of Kinsella in second and her club mate Roberts in third – a superb display of racing depth and determination from the women’s field.
