Donnacha McCarthy wins World Triathlon Para Cup Alanya

Donnacha McCarthy has had his first win at international level! Donnacha and guide Sean Husband won the 2021 World Triathlon Para Cup Alanya on Friday, 1st October.

The new pairing of McCarthy and guide Sean Husband showed strong form in just their second international race together.

How the Race Unfolded

Off the back of a ninth place finish at last week’s 2021 Europe Triathlon Championships Valencia, this was McCarthy’s second race in six days.

Out of the swim Donnacha and Sean had almost two minutes to make up to reach leader Vasyl Zakrevsky (UKR) at that point. The pair stuck to their plan and got to work on the bike to put in the quickest split of the day on the three lap course. Posting 29:17 for 20 kilometres on the bike meant that Donnacha McCarthy and Sean Husband entered the five kilometre run towards the front of the field.

The win was sealed on the run with another top split of 19:29 to cross the line 59 seconds ahead of Zakrevsky, Anatolii Varfolomieiev (UKR) was third.

Speaking afterwards, Donnacha summed up their race;

“We’d a really good race today. Had a plan going into the race and executed that to perfection really, worked hard for the swim and the bike then a controlled run.”
