Three Medals for Tri-Team Ireland in Venice

Tri-Team Ireland took home three medals over the weekend from the European Duathlon Champs in Venice-Caorle, Italy.

Martina McIntyre dominated the F55–54 AG in the Sprint Distance Champs on Saturday, claiming Tri-Team Ireland’s gold medal of 2023 with impressive finish time of 01:13:56.

And she wasn’t done there because the following day McIntyre togged out again and this time won a bronze medal in the Standard Distance Champs.

Ireland’s other medal over the weekend came from Adriele Prina-Mello, who finished third in the 50-54 AG in Saturday’s Sprint Distance Champs in 01:05:02, just over 30 seconds off first place.

Adriele followed up with a very good 5th in the Standard Distance Champs on Sunday.

10 Athletes Fly the Flag

In all, 10 Irish athletes raced in Venice-Caorle – the opening event of the International Age Group racing season.

Four were involved in the sprint event on Saturday. Mag Kirwan finished commendable 6th in the 55-59 age group in her first international Age Group race. Wini Gallagher also had a blasting International kick coming 9th in the 45-49 AG followed closely by her friend and training partner Sinead Del Bello in 11th place.

Ireland regular Owen Barron put two strong fights in both days to make sure he got up there with the best in medal contention. Barron placed 5th in the Sprint and 4th in the Standard.

Steven Garvey had an impressive performance with a well deserved 5th place in the 35-39 AG Standard Distance race. Fergus Meade also had a strong performance in his debut with a 5th place finish in the 40-44 Age Group Standard Distance race. Donald Fitzmaurice made his international debut, coming in 13th in the 60-64 AG after being DSQ’d in the Sprint Distance race.
