Weekend Wrap May 7/8th

A Tri Day to Remember
On Sports Ireland Campus, around 200 athletes gathered in the sun for a very special day. Tri Day was part awards ceremony and part what triathletes do best – racing!
A mix of kid’s Splash and Dash and club aquathlon relay racing in the National Aquatic Centre and the grounds of Sports Campus in the morning was followed by food, refreshments and a special 2021 awards in the marquee.
Well done to everyone who raced, received an award or just turned up and here’s to doing it all again in 2023!
Hughes 2nd in her AG at IM WC
Hilary Hughes was the stand out Irish result from the IRONMAN World Championships in St George, USA over the weekend, as she finished a very impressive 2nd in her AG with a time of 10:13:57. As well as being a silver medalist, Hilary was the 4th female AGer across the finish line – strong stuff!

You can catch all the results from IRONMAN St George here.

Barron 3rd at World Middle Distance Duathlon Champs
One athlete not able to collect his award at Tri Day was the International Age Group athlete of the year, Owen Barron. Owen was in Viborg, Denmark racing at the World Triathlon Powerman Middle Distance Duathlon Championships. Owen finished 3rd in the 60-64 AG and added yet another medal to what must be a very large case of international age group silver wear.

Mintern 5th at Challenge Riccione
And finally, we missed it last week but former sprint, standard and middle distance national champion Chris Mintern recorded a strong 5th place in the men’s pro field at Challenge Riccione. Good job Chris!
