Weekend Wrap: April 22/23rd

It almost felt like the first weekend of the summer. In Dublin the county’s top duathletes lined out for the first national champs of the year, London hosted elite triathlon (with a technological twist) while the first swim-bike-run events of the year got underway in Limerick and Sligo. Duathlon National Champs

On Saturday morning, two new National Champions were crowned at Belpark’s Phoenix Park Duathlon. A fantastic race saw Niall Cornyn and Ciara Wilson win the first titles of 2022, alongside a host of Age Group, intervarsity and junior winners.

Edgar Narrowly Misses Super League Final

Meanwhile in the London Olympic arena, elite triathlete James Edgar was racing the hugely exciting Super League Arena Games event.

Edgar finished 6th in his heat, just one second behind Portugese veteran Joao Silva. Unfortunately it wasn’t enough to see him progress to the finals which you can watch back on YouTube.

Yelverton & Doellken win Joey Hannan

Perhaps the main sign that summer is on the way was the emergence of the pool triathlon in Limerick and Sligo.

Limerick Triathlon Club staged its long running Joey Hannan triathlon on the grounds of UL. The race witnessed its customary strong turnout and a deep fields across sprint and standard distances.

Mike Yelverton and Shauna Doellken won the standard distance while Ethan Doherty and Mary Corless won the sprint race.

Sexton & Foley win Sligo

Sligo Triathlon Club hosted a sprint and super sprint distance pool triathlon with perfect conditions outside making for a memorable day. Brian Sexton and Heather Foley got their seasons off to a great start with victory in the men’s and women’s races.
