Irish Athletes Racing the IRONMAN World Champs

The delayed IRONMAN World Championships 2021 take place this weekend in St. George, Utah, United States and as always, there is a decent representation from Ireland with 23 athletes lining up among the 3,000 competitors for the pinnacle of long distance triathlon racing.

Tomorrow will mark the first time ever that the IM World Champs have been held outside of Kona and a tantalising prospect lies in store in both the women’s and men’s races, with two stacked fields featuring long distance legends, Olympic gold medalists and multiple world champions.

The Course

The race might be out of Kona, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to be any easier (and perhaps even harder) with a 180.2km bike course (following a 3,800m reservoir swim) that will lead athletes through desert landscapes and 2,248 meters of elevation gain. The 42.2km run course features another 431m of climbing before the finish line where athletes from this side of the pond will be greeted by a familiar voice in the form of Joanne Murphy from Galway Triathlon Club and the Tri Talking Sport podcast, who is working as an official announcer at the race.
