Gallery & Results: The Lost Sheep

One of the country’s most challenging races, the Lost Sheep made its welcome return on Saturday with weather conditions that only made for a more epic day of hilly and tough triathlon.

The Cork Triathlon Club race was Round 20 of the Triathlon National Series and a chance to follow in the footsteps of some of the sport’s domestic legends.

Scully Climbs to Top Spot

A very close men’s race saw Michael Scully move from third following the swim and bike to the front during the run thanks to a quick split of 01:21:24.

He finished on 04:21:45, just 70secs ahead of second placed athlete Scott Graham – an incredibly close finish for such a gruelling course. Graham was himself locked in a tussle with Cork Tri’s Donnacha Kiely for most of the day and only really put some distance between himself and Kiely on the run. Kiely finished 3rd on 04:24:49 – just three minutes after the winner.

Kinsella Claims Major Win

The women’s race was just as fiercely contested with Kim Hickey, a woman who has appeared on the Lost Sheep podium before, leading out of the water only to be overtaken by Aine Kinsella in T1.

Hickey regained her advantage on the bike, but not by much, as both women stayed within 30secs of each other until T2.

Kinsella was quicker again in the second transition – by a full minute in fact, which meant both women were neck-in-neck again heading on to the run.

Here Kinsella finally decided the outcome of the race with a 01:33:49 split, enough for her to win by two minutes over Hickey, who had to settle for second place.

Local athlete and former Super Series winner Rachel Hawker was strong across the board, running the second quickest split of the women’s race. She crossed the line just three minutes after Hickey to claim third.
