Zwift Winter-Spring League: Rnd 8 Results

Round 8 of the league is in the bag, and what a round it was! A combination of one minute starting intervals between categories and the “leg snapper” climb in each lap looks to have spread out the groups, with larger gaps between riders than over some of the previous weeks.

Scroll below as we give the run down on who’s up and who’s down on the league tables after last night’s race. See you next week for some Sand and Sequoias!

Need a bit of Stretching?!

Have the legs recovered from Innsbruckring? If not, try out today’s Strength & Stretch Session with High Performance Coach Lynne Algar and you will be back feeling tip top after it! You can join these videos every Thursday on our Facebook, YouTube and Instagram pages.

DON’T FORGET!

These tables are of Triathlon Ireland riders only but we rely on you to tell us this fact through club affiliation – we have a whole section on how the table is calculated and what to do if you don’t see your name on this page – just scroll down to the bottom of the article.

For riders who were WKG’d, UPG’d or upgraded by ZwiftPower – please note that these are automatic decisions made by ZwiftPower which Triathlon Ireland has no authority over. If you get in touch with us, we will do our best to explain what can sometimes be a confusing scenario but before you do that please read Zwift’s FAQs which has the technical explanations for all of these decisions and will likely do a better job then we can.

Familiar names at the top of the Men’s Cat A leaderboard, as Mark Thompson moves back onto the podium and into third spot. Enda Bagnall and Adriele Prina retain the top spots.

Congrats to Limerick TC’s Ronan Costelloe on his top result of the league thus far! Costelloe rode into second last night in a sprint to the line with winner Eden TC’s Enda Bagnall and Belpark’s Adriele Prina.

A dreaded HR Monitor issue meant that the ever consistent Aoife Wilson from Northwest TC was filtered in last night’s results. Her previous five results means she still sits on 305 points, but needs another three rounds to complete the league.

The Innsbruckring course certainly suited Gail Martin from Lisburn TC. Martin made a return to the top of the podium last night for the first time since round three, an impressive 17 seconds ahead of second placed Nicola Kehoe from Waterford TC.

Helen Perry was third yesterday, and retains her third spot on the league table, with Medbh Pevoy holding second.

Super consistency over the last number of weeks has paid off for Newry TC’s Oliver Harkin. A win last night ahead of Pulse’s Kevin Derrig and 3D’s Simon Befort means Harkin now heads the league table.

Gary Condell remains in second and long time leader Kevin Gilleece is down to third.

No change in the top three of the Men’s C League with leader Peter Blissett increasing his margin over second placed Pat Linehan last night.
Blissett finished second and is drawing his total from just seven races, giving him a comfortable lead for now.

That doesn’t mean the league is settled however – Cork Tri’s Eric Lucking won on Innsbruckring and like Blissett, has only completed seven rounds – the gap to the top is 70 points but if Lucking continues his winning streak he could soon replace some of his lower scoring rounds and come for the king!

2Róisín Donohoe Longford TC412
3Edel FosterLimerick TC364

The closest battle in the history of Triathlon Ireland’s Zwift racing (?) continues in the women’s C League. Yet again, Cathy Cunningham and Roisin Donohoe went up against each other last night and yet again the lead had switched by the time the race was over!

Over the course of the past three weeks the margin has moved from four points (advantage Donohoe) to three points (advantage Cunningham) and finally to just a single point with Donohoe now back in the lead. We await next week’s race on Watopia Sand and Sequoias with anticipation!

It’s not just in the top two places that the Women’s C League is witnessing top drawer action. Edel Foster holds on to third thanks to finishing 5th last night but the Limerick TC rider (and for that matter Cunningham and Donohoe) won’t be unaware of Elaine Lally who for the second week in row was the quickest athlete among all her competitors and moves in to fourth with her form on an upward trajectory and a race in hand.

Louise McGirl missed last night’s race but still sits atop the Women’s D League on 371 points. Maeve Galloway was second placed last night and as a result has closed the gap to just seven points – both McGirl and Galloway now have seven races under their belts so it’s very much game-on for the lead in Women’s Cat D.

Pulse’s Rachel Eager moves in to joint third for the first time in the league after another top ten finish in what has been an extremely consistent series of performances this season. Along with her on the third step of the podium is Miriam Grogan who after a slow-ish start to the league has gained a lot of momentum in recent rounds. Grogan won last night’s race – add that to her second places in Rounds 6 & 7 and bear in mind that she has a race in hand over everyone above her in the league table and Grogan looks well placed to mount a challenge for the overall lead in the coming rounds.

Stephen Smyth retains his place at the top of the Men’s D League but the question is, how long will it last? With second place in Innsbruckring, Keith Ryan moves from third to second overall, 23 points adrift of Smyth but with a race in hand. Kevin Hughes drops out of the top three after sitting out last night’s race with third overall taken by the rapidly improving Ambroise Duggan.

RESULTS

You can see all the race results and dig in to the in-depth data on the race’s ZwiftPower page.

In contrast to Triathlon Ireland’s autumn league, the 2021 Winter-Spring League does not have its own page on Zwift Power. Instead we are compiling the individual and club rankings ourselves – this is being done to ensure we can allocate points equally to men and women.

The same scoring criteria apply from our previous league: (with women and men assigned points separately).

1st : 61 points
2nd : 56 points
3rd : 51 points
4th-50th : 49-3 points
Every finisher from 51st onwards will receive 1 point.

The team competition pulls points each week from a club’s best five riders – unlike the Autumn League however once each week’s club score is finalised it can’t change of a rider subsequently changes teams.

The same will apply to riders who manage to earn an upgrade during the league – if you move up a category, you cannot take your already earned points with you as this would not be fair to your new rivals in your upgraded cat.

WHY AM I NOT THERE?

If you don’t see your name on either the ZwiftPower race results sheet or the Triathlon Ireland league standings here are some leads to follow up:

FILTERED RIDERS

ZwiftPower will ‘filter’ (aka exclude) any results from riders for a number of reasons, the most common being the absence of a heart rate monitor, a verified power meter or those who entered a power category below their ability/exceeded the W/kg for the power category they entered.

These are automated decisions based on power and made by ZwiftPower not Triathlon Ireland.

While Zwift racing is primarily about having fun, we have a responsibility to ensure that any race that carried our name is also fair so unfortunately if you were excluded or ‘filtered’ it is for a legitimate reason. Filtering is an automatic, data based decision by ZwiftPower designed to ensure an above board race.

We know it can be heart breaking when your HR monitor or Power Meter data fail you in a race but view it like having a mechanical that causes you to pull out of a real life race – it’s unfortunate but not grounds to have your result re-instated.

LEAGUE TABLES

If you are missing from the Triathlon Ireland League Table it is likely for one of two reasons
– You are not assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club on ZwiftPower
– You are not assigned to Triathlon Ireland on ZwiftPower

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club or to Triathlon Ireland (as a club) will be included in the results sheets. If however you are a Triathlon Ireland 2021 member and have been left off for these reasons, drop us an email – we are happy to re-instate you. Please email roisin@triathlonireland.com.

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club will be added to the Club Rankings tables.
