Zwift Winter-Spring League: Rnd 5 Results

Round 5: Greatest London Flat

As the name suggests, last night was the flattest of courses as Round 5 of the Triathlon Ireland Zwift Winter-Spring League completed four laps of the Greatest London Flat course. Little surprise then that the groups stayed mostly together before finishing the evening with a huge sprint for the line. It was heads down and elbows out as the riders with the biggest 30second power pulled out gaps just large enough to ensure superior placings and league points on the finish line.

Next week we continue with the flat-ish theme as we tackle a big loop of Watopia on the “Magnificent 8” route (which in fairness does take in an ascent of the Hilly KOM) but for now, let’s look at the league tables after five rounds of racing.

Don’t forget!

These tables are of Triathlon Ireland riders only but we rely on you to tell us this fact through club affiliation – we have a whole section on how the table is calculated and what to do if you don’t see your name on this page – just scroll down to the bottom of the article.

For riders who were WKG’d, UPG’d or upgraded by ZwiftPower – please note that these are automatic decisions made by ZwiftPower which Triathlon Ireland has no authority over. If you get in touch with us, we will do our best to explain what can sometimes be a confusing scenario but before you do that please read Zwift’s FAQs which has the technical explanations for all of these decisions and will likely do a better job then we can.

A LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL MEN

Position Name Club Points
1 Enda Bagnall Eden TC 305
2 Adriele Prina Belpark TC 251
3 Don Lapierre Cork TC 237
With a 30sec power of 668W, Enda Bagnall sprinted clear of the field last night and took his winning streak to five races in a row. It’s early days yet but right now, the Eden TC rider looks practically unbeatable at the top of the Men’s A League. Having been locked in a points draw last week, Stephen Rowan finished fours spots ahead of Don Lapierre in London to move four points ahead. That just tells part of the story however, as TriLimits’ Mark Farquhar and Stephen Mulbery from NorthWest TriClub are consistently clocking up podium results following late starts to the league – watch this space in the weeks to come!
A LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL WOMEN
Position Name Club Points
1 Aoife Wilson NorthWest TC 183
Finishing eighth overall in Cat A last night earned Aoife Wilson another 61 points for NorthWest Tri Club. Aoife finished in a sprint for the overall top placings last night, with the third through to eighth placed athletes finishing on 34:44 with little to separate them. Looking forward to seeing more to come from Wilson in the weeks to come!

1 Gail Martin  Lisburn TC 280
2 Medbh Peavoy Pulse TC 249
3 Helen Perry  TriLimits TC 241
In third place last night, Lisburn’s Gail Martin still tops the Women’s B League, with Pulse TC’s Medbh Peavoy second and Helen Perry from TriLimits TC third.
Topping the podium last night, Pulse TC’s Clare Dillon is currently in ninth on the league table with just two rounds completed. If her form continues in coming weeks, she will surely make her mark on the league.
B league INDIVIDUAL MEN

Position Name Club Points
1 Kevin Gilleece  3D TC 251
2 Gary Condell Trilogy TC 233
2 Oliver Harkin Newry TC 229

Kevin Gilleece from 3D TC retains his lead in the overall league table but the competition is fierce for the top spots in this large category of 118 riders! With Stephen Pepper’s promotion by Zwift Power to the A league, Trilogy’s Gary Condell moves into second. Winning for the second time last night, and moving into third in the league points is Newry TC’s Oliver Harkin. The B Cat remains a difficult one to call and it will be interesting to see who comes into form in the next few rounds.

Position Name Club Points
1 Peter Blissett  Cork TC 229
2 Gary O’ Connor Down TC 205
3 Pat Linehan Piranha TC 204

League leader Peter Blisset sat out last night, giving second placed rider Gary O’Connor a great chance to pull back the 24 point deficit he needed to go top of the men’s C League. Gary did cross the line 4th out of Cat C last night but unfortunately for him, last night’s race was the latest in a series of increasingly impressive performances – each with an improving W/Kg value. He was WKG’d out of the results – and has now also been promoted to the B cat by Zwift Power – congratulations/commiserations on the upgrade Gary!

Pat Lenehan made hay with his best performance of the league so far and moves in to third on 204 points.

3 Edel Foster Limerick TC 226

We have a battle on our hands on the Women’s C League with just four points separating league leader Cathy Cunningham and second placed Roisín O’Donohoe. O’Donohoe won last night’s race but has been beaten by Cunningham in the past. Both will also need to keep an eye on Edel Foster who has cemented her place in third last night but lies just 35 points off the top.

D LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL woMEN’S

Position Name Club Points
1 Joanne Murphy  290
2 Louise McGirl 259
2 Maeve Galloway Down TC 201

Can anyone stop Joanne Murphy at the top of the women”s D league? Not right now anyway as she cruised for victory last night for the third week in a row. Murphy has a 31 point cushion over second placed rider in the league and on the night Louise McGirl. McGirl in turn lies 58 points clear of Maeve Galloway who came home in third last night to take over the ranking from Mary Coyne by a single point.

D LEAGUE INDIVIDUAL MEN’S

Position Name Club Points
1 Stephen Smyth  3D TC 257
2 Stephen Ring Mallow TC 236
2 Kevin Hughes TriLimitsTC 229

The top two positions in the men’s D league have a settled look to them with the two Stephens – Smyth and Ring staying put in first and second after last night’s race – though it should be noted that the order on the night saw Ring beat Smyth to the line by 20secs. Last night’s winner – Kevin Hughes moves in to third overall and with one less race to his name than the two Stephens could be on a trajectory to the top.

Results

< VIEW THE STANDINGS AFTER ROUND 5 >

You can see all the race results and dig in to the in-depth data on the race’s ZwiftPower page.

In contrast to Triathlon Ireland’s autumn league, the 2021 Winter-Spring League does not have its own page on Zwift Power. Instead we are compiling the individual and club rankings ourselves – this is being done to ensure we can allocate points equally to men and women.

The same scoring criteria apply from our previous league: (with women and men assigned points separately).

1st : 61 points
2nd : 56 points
3rd : 51 points
4th-50th : 49-3 points
Every finisher from 51st onwards will receive 1 point.

The team competition pulls points each week from a club’s best five riders – unlike the Autumn League however once each week’s club score is finalised it can’t change of a rider subsequently changes teams.

The same will apply to riders who manage to earn an upgrade during the league – if you move up a category, you cannot take your already earned points with you as this would not be fair to your new rivals in your upgraded cat.

Why Am I Not There?

If you don’t see your name on either the ZwiftPower race results sheet or the Triathlon Ireland league standings here are some leads to follow up:

FILTERED RIDERS

ZwiftPower will ‘filter’ (aka exclude) any results from riders for a number of reasons, the most common being the absence of a heart rate monitor, a verified power meter or those who entered a power category below their ability/exceeded the W/kg for the power category they entered.

These are automated decisions based on power and made by ZwiftPower not Triathlon Ireland.

While Zwift racing is primarily about having fun, we have a responsibility to ensure that any race that carried our name is also fair so unfortunately if you were excluded or ‘filtered’ it is for a legitimate reason. Filtering is an automatic, data based decision by ZwiftPower designed to ensure an above board race.

We know it can be heart breaking when your HR monitor or Power Meter data fail you in a race but view it like having a mechanical that causes you to pull out of a real life race – it’s unfortunate but not grounds to have your result re-instated.

League Tables

If you are missing from the Triathlon Ireland League Table it is likely for one of two reasons
– You are not assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club on ZwiftPower
– You are not assigned to Triathlon Ireland on ZwiftPower

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club or to Triathlon Ireland (as a club) will be included in the results sheets. If however you are a Triathlon Ireland 2021 member and have been left off for these reasons, drop us an email – we are happy to re-instate you. Please email roisin@triathlonireland.com.

Only riders assigned to a Triathlon Ireland club will be added to the Club Rankings tables.
